Where is the Dell?.....Really

Postby Westbury Warrior » Mon 01 Feb, 2010 5:48 pm

Hi All
Im trying to locate the exact location of "THE DELL" somewhere at the foot of Ironstone. Have tried to follow signs that have fallen off stumps and marker tapes but not sure if its closer to Bastion Caves or the Stone Hut, would really like some feed back.
Enjoy the forum.

I am also keen to know just where The Dell is?
Like Westbury Warrior I have also attempted to follow signs that have fallen off trees and marker tape on trees. I have checked the touring tasmania site and the maps into Bastion Cascades but for the life of me I can't see anything there that even suggests the location of The Dell. I recently chatted with someone who thought The Dell was a name given to small glacial tarn or lake at the foot of Bastion Bluff. There is a "fairly recent sign" on a tree - just above Stone Hut- that reads "The Dell" . Does anyone know how far "The Dell" is from that sign? :?:

I'd not heard of it either. A quick search on theLIST brings up a map showing "Dell Creek" and the "Dell Track" to Bastion Bluff, but that's all I've got. :-(

Thanks Son of Beach :D . The list site you directed me to is very helpful.
The Tasmania Bushwalk site - or should I say the people who contribute to this site -are amazing with the knowledge and experience they are willing to share :o . The list site confirms the information that was passed onto us. I reckon this Saturday might be a good day to see if I can find The Dell.
If I do hopefully I will have some pictures to share. Thanks once again.

Well after wandering along the base of Basion Bluff on Saturday.
Actually we walked the entire length of The Dell Track - well we think we did :?:
We followed The Dell Track where it meets the track that comes up from Chasm Falls
and followed it until we met the circuit track from Meander and Split Rock Falls.
In chatting with a lady at church yesterday it seems that if we had followed the track that comes up from Chasm Falls it eventually takes you to Mt Ironstone- our map confirms this. Well if we would have continued on that track for about another kilometre we would have found The Dell. Well it looks like another day exploring the glories and beauty of the Meander State Forest :D

Thanks Rose for the information. I have also wondered the whereabouts of The Dell. Let's know when you are heading back!! The touringtasmania site is mine. I have tried to provide information for people as this one does!!

The more I learn about the place the greater the case for the Meander Forest Reserve to be a national park. It is very sad that roads and signposting have fallen into such disrepair in such a beautiful area.

Yesterday ( Monday) we, along with Tassie Tigger” believed we walked into “The Dell”.
After climbing up to The Stone Hut, from the car park at the end of Quarry Road,
then proceeding up on top of The Stone Hut on about another 30 metres we encountered a track junction.
There are 2 red track markers on a tree and the marker pointing right indicates “The Dell”
After following this track for about 45 minutes we eventually found another track junction.
On an old dead tree are a couple of very weathered signs. One of these signs informed us we had encountered “The Dell Track”.

This track runs roughly along the foot of Basion Bluff. In one direction are Meander Falls and in the other direction is “The Dell”. The sign on the other side of tree indicates it is 11/2 hours back to Quarry Road via The Stone Hut. It took us about 2 hours to reach this point. We then headed off in the direction the sign pointed to The Dell.
After walking about 200 – 250 meters we encountered yet another track junction with some old weathered signs on a dead tree. Here there is also a sign indicating the direction of The Dell. After following a clearly marked track for about 20 minutes over sections scree and through bush we found ourselves in a lovely wooded enclosed hallow at the foot of Basion Bluff.
The climb to the top of Basion Bluff involved about 15 minutes following a track through the bush and up a fairly steep section of scree with the sound of water cascading over rocks under you. The views from the top of the bluff were marvellous. From where we left our car parked at the end of Quarry Road it took us about 7 hours to walk into The Dell and return. The sign at the car park says “The Dell” 5 hours. Obviously we must have been abit slower. This is a walk well worth while doing

This is the 2nd sign we encountered on an old tree.
The Dell is only about 20 minutes further from here

Here is the first weathered sign we found.
It is off to the side of the track and easy to miss
