Track and Road Closures: Tassie

Postby whynotwalk » Wed 30 Jul, 2014 1:36 pm

Just noticed a few walker-relevant posts on the PWS facebook page. Looks like our crazy winter weather is biting out there!

Lake St Clair Track Closures

Following severe weather and numerous tree falls, the following tracks around Lake St Clair have been temporarily closed. Short Walks, including Lake walk, Watersmeet, Platypus Bay and Larmairremener tabelti - Aboriginal cultural walk. All longer walks, including the Lake Side (Echo Point) Track.

AND

Lake Dobson Road closed.

The Lake Dobson Road at Mt Field National Park is closed due to numerous tree falls overnight. Access to the Visitor Centre, Café and Russell Falls is still open.Crews are currently working on clearing the road and we will update when the road reopens.

AND ALSO

Temporary closure of the dinghy service at Cockle Creek in the Southwest National Park.

The dinghy service providing access across Cockle Creek to the South Coast Track and South Cape Bay Track has been temporarily closed due to hazardous conditions. High seas and heavy rain are preventing safe passage across Cockle Creek. The service may be closed for a day or two until water levels subside.

For further information contact the PWS Huonville-Southwest Field Centre on 6264 8460.

Good stuff (notification here). I'm wondering about roads into arm river, if anyone has been out in the last day or two?
(hoping we don't get someone stuck out there with merely a leatherman saw :( )

I'm looking out for stories from people unfortunate enough to be on Overland track or South Coast track. Or worse, SW Cape, that would be bad...

Just had a look around and it seems the northern half is getting most of the wind. Info I saw says gusts around Hobart are about 10km, Butlers Gorge 15km, but L'ton is getting 90km gusts and Devonport nearly 100km. A few trees down in my street so I can only imagine what's happening on some of the tracks

Very gusty around Westbury/Deloraine area thats for sure. If I didn't have to go to work id set my tent up in the back paddock and see how it handles the 100kph gusts ;)

Let me know if you do that Dan and I'll keep an eye out for it somewhere about 50km south of the Westbury / Deloraine area

We had the wind yesterday in Hobart. 174kph recorded on Wellington.

My local golf course lost over 20 large trees and made the news, cars blown off garages... etc etc.
Much more pleasant today, 6 degrees, floods and snow to 200m
Nothing to see here.

That's getting close to the 200kph Tasmanian record (which was on Wellington). Scottsdale had 194kph in '09 as well. Obviously there's been stronger that hasn't been measured though.
Keep an eye out for Dan's tent, It might be coming your way if he sets it up

This thread is reminding me of one Easter not so long ago... No, I thankfully wasn't there at the time.

Edit - haven't figured out how to make the link work without the whole shebang. One day.

There's flooded roads everywhere from the Gordon River Road to L'ton, to Burnie. Keep an ear on ABC local radio if you're travelling the situation is 'fluid' to say the least :(

Annoying. I've been hoping to get away Saturday morning for a few days.

Haha, surely you joust?

Just a snatchem strap Corv, quick and effective. The road needs attention, may be a bit sketchy for low clearance (cars).

Update from PWS facebook page, Fri 1/8 at 4pm.

Update on parks and reserves affected by severe weather

Cradle Mountain -
Cradle Mountain received about 30 cm of snow on Thursday night. The road from the Ranger Station to Dove Lake is open only to 4WDs and this is likely to be the case tomorrow with more snow expected overnight. Call the visitor centre on 6492 1110 for the latest on conditions within the park. For information on the condition of access roads to Cradle Mountain, check the Tasmania Police site here.

Lake St Clair – all tracks are now open. About 10-15 cm of snow fell overnight, with snow falling intermittently through the day.

Warrawee Conservation Area access – Mersey River Shale Road closure
The flying fox tower and cable at the Mersey River Latrobe DPIPWE gauging station has been damage by a tree fall overnight. The cable is both in the river and also low hanging above the access road to the site.
Unfortunately this will not be fixed until early next week and for public safety, the boom gate on Shale Road has been locked to prevent public access and potential harm. Unfortunately this closure coincides with the opening of the fishing season and some anglers may want to use this road. It is hoped the road will be re-opened early next week.

Mt Field National Park
The Lake Dobson Road is open to 4WDs and 2WDs with chains. The Tall Trees Track is being checked and will likely be closed due to tree falls. For the latest in road and snow conditions phone 6288 1149.
