Good 2 night Tassie walk ??

Postby forest » Fri 20 Jan, 2012 10:12 am

Looking at a possible trip late in March to Tassie.
We have no plan's yet but I'm eyeing off some flights and things to do while I'm down south.

Flying from Sydney to Launceston.

I will be with my wife who's a bit of a non walker so she will look around while I run off into the bush as usual......
Might be handy as she can drop me off and pick me up.
Probably drive towards craddle mountain etc and generally have a good look around in the weekish long trip.

I'm after a good 2 night tassie walk. I'm happy to navigate cross country but would preffer a tracked walk so I can cover some distance and see more sight's in my short time.
No issues with track grading, I'm an experienced walker and happy to brave the Tassie weather and terrain.

Any thought's on something that would suit.

I'm certain there would be heaps and heaps of possiblities but I'm manly after something with good views and scenic campsites would be ideal.......

Happy to walk solo but at the same time if there is another local walker looking for a lift somewhere and feel's like a NSWelshman taging along that's always an option.

Hey there, given you are in the nth, The Walls is the obvious choice or something like Arm River to Cradle or the reverse or if the ferry is running Arm River to Narcissus.
Many many options in the SW...

Ossa or Pelion West as a three day trip would be good. Can do a circuit via the Lees Paddock to Kia Ora track.
Recent Peaks: Snowy South, Ben Nevis, Victoria, Blackboy, Bastion

If you are already around the Cradle Mtn area, I would recommend a night in Waterfall Valley and then the next at Lake Rodway. Both campsites are pretty damn scenic, and the valley around Lake Rodway (with views of the under-rated "back" of Cradle Mtn) is stunning. You could summit Cradle and/or Barn bluff on the way in for the views you are after, then spend the middle day exploring Lakes Will and Windemere.

I guess I'll have to email national Parks to confirm but does anyone know if it's a requirement to pay the overland track fee if I only use it for a short section and don't use the huts ??

Looking forward to some trial's this coming weekend with my Hexamid on the kosi main range for 4 nights.
What's your thoughts on using the Hexamid around Cradle Mt ??
Are there some sheltered campsites or is it quite exposed.

Nope. Only if you're doing the OLT during the designated period.

The overland track fee is not for use of the huts, it's for "Walking the Overland track", which means walking from the Cradle Mt area to the Lake St Clair end.
You can enter or leave via Arm River, Lees paddock, etc and should not have to pay the fee even though you walk on part of the OT. You cannot walk the OT all the way in the opposite direction.
If you do a part trip you can use the huts, but I think walkers who have paid the fee get preference so don't plan on using them.

The only areas you can camp near Cradle Mt are Waterfall Valley Hut and Scott Kilvert Hut. Even if you don't use the huts you should camp near one of them, or beyond Waterfall Valley Hut.

All huts on the OT are fore everyone, people have died because someone was told that the hut was full( that is how the young bloke died in the 70's between WFV and Windermere).
Quote from Parks Site"So you don't need to rush to the next hut to stake out your territory, as nobody is allowed to refuse space to another walker."

Re: Good 2 night Tassie walk ?? Culled to one night !!

Postby forest » Tue 24 Jan, 2012 7:05 am

Okay, so I have a bit of a plan.

Look's like my two nights may have been culled down to one........ :( :( :( :(
Wifey wants to do a bit more on our 8 days other than sit around waiting for me for 3 of them. I can kinda see where she's coming from but my eyes are somewhat clouded.
Oh well, I'll just have to do a longer, 100% walk focused trip later in the year or next.
Ideally she would come with me on the walk but her knee has given her curry since NZ South Island last Nov when she has irritated something in it.
We did 15k's the other week from Cowan to Brooklyn on GNW and towards the end her knee really flamed up again.
Talking to a few specialists now but I'm planning for her to count this one out and just do some shorter day walk things with me for now till it's healed/repaired.

Look's like I'll do the following.
Day 1.
Depart from Ronney Creek, Wander up the Lake Rodway Track, Joint the Cradle Cirque and climb Barn Bluff (Pending weather), Continue onto Windemere. Worst case and I'm a bit slower than normal, Stay in Waterfall Valley.

Day 2
Early start, Return along the OLT from Windemere, drop into Lake Will, Peak Cradle Mt if weather is kind. Hopefully meet my wife somewhere around Marion's Lookout, Dove Lake etc. Might lug a small UHF so we can find out where each other is at specifically.

I know I'll have a bit of back tracking but it's looking like my best option.
It's either this or just day walks. I'd really like to get a night out somewhere while we are down south and we will be in the area and all.......

Open to suggestions, Any other options that may be off track to form a better loop starting/ ending in Ronney creek or area. PM if required for that.
I believe the above plan should work out time wise, it's mainly day one that will be a bit longer I think ??
I rip along quickly though and being a one nighter should have quite a light pack load.
Most of the OLT looks like simple walking. Hopefully I can find some mud and rocks to play in at somepoint. :D

You could stay at Waterfall Valley or Scott Kilvert Hut and make a circuit around the back of Cradle, Lake Rodway, Twisted Lakes etc You could go along the Face track summit Cradle and return via Lake Wilkes...

I've basically done this route three times now and it is sensational, you could meet your wife at Marions or Kitchen Hut.
