Same work crew are doing the extension to the Nth-Sth track, it's REALLY well built.

There was a pretty average story on Strathgorson last week on 7.30 having a dig at Hydro for shutting the town down, could have been a bit more aggressive though

Thats not a bad story about Stathgordon.. The 'chalet' was under a lease agreement, if it was viable it would still be up and running, I doubt hydro can do much about tourist numbers, maybe tourism tasmania can....

As much as i hate to say it, it will probably take a Dick Smith or Jan Cameron to throw some money at Hydro to buy the town if something is to be done about rejuvenating the area. Hydro have sold off old towns in the past (eg Bronte Park). The old houses could be re-sold as shacks, I'd buy a place out there if it were for sale.

Unfortunately and I have this upon VERY good authority the caretakers at the chalet were given an advertising budget of next to $0, they were not included on the tourism industries 'list of preferred operators' and were effectively hung out to dry. There was IMO opinion a concerted effort to turn tourists around at Maydena because the powers that be don't want tourists to see the blockade in the Florentine. Think about how many people would do walks like The Sentinels, Mt Sprent, or Wedge if the infrastucture was there. Even the creepy crawly trail is shut half the time.

As much as I like th e journo in question very few real questions were asked or issues addressed in the story. On the other hand it means I get the place to myself when I go down there

Well.. i can believe that...

I reckon its a great place, for types like us its a hub of some pretty full on adventures.
Unfortunately it takes much more than that though. Its probably, just as much the opposite.. infrastructure, food, 'attractions' that keeps the average tourist and their inevitable $'s imo It would take a leap of faith and huge injection of cash.. kinda along the lines of Three Capers.. ? Theres not a lot for non outdoor types (like the hordes taking pictures through car and bus windows.. the ones with all the money.. maybe if the road was taken through to the west coast from there?

Plenty of opportunities, abseiling in the gorge? Decent mountain bike trails using hydro roads, NOT closing the only place with amenities....
Heard the other day NZ are spending $45mil just on NEW mtn bike trails, build it and they will come.....

I sit on the fence a bit, I do think tourism has great potential in Tassie (perhaps if regulators (and tourism tas maybe) step aside like they did for other 'industries'), what else is left??
Meanwhile, just as happy for it 'as is'.. great to know you can get a free bed and top up the tank courtesy of hydro though

A couple of years ago I walked out to the Totem Pole with about 55kg of climbing gear. And while the track was okay, an upgrade sounds like a stearling idea to me.

My wife HATED me for suggesting it was an easy couple of hours

For as long as I've walked in that area I've never felt there was a need for an upgrade. It was great as it was. Waste of money!

Actually I disagree Stibb,

Some tracks need to be upgraded, like Cape Huay because then the average tourist can get a sample of our amazing natural places safely(because lets face it sometimes they can't tie their shoelaces without hurting themselves) and some tracks shouldn't be improved or built at all........

Last time i was on the Cape Hauy track it had at least thirty fallen trees over it. That's definitely something that needs to be fixed.
