TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Patagonia nanopuff hoodie

OK having just bought myself some new underwear for next winter ( sale at Patagonia for the silk weight top $ 65-and sale at Rays for the grid fleece top and pants $7.50 each ) I am seriously thinking of abandoning fleece jumpers for next winter and try Andy Kirkpatricks layering system.

My system would use the silk weight for most use, the grid-fleece if really cold, a pull-on pile vest ( I still have my Katmandu paddle tops from when they made reasonable gear ) and the Nanopuff as both insulation and wind stopper.
Has any-one here actually used the Nanopuff as a ski touring garment yet??
Talking to staff at Patagonia in Torquay they seem to be bought mainly by the summer surfing crowd but trying it on last week during the cold spell it was both warmer and lighter than my normal Polartec100 jumper and reasonably windproof as well.
I is a very slim fit however and no way could I use it as a warm jacket/jumper over my heavy fleece, so it seems one system or the other.
Opinions? Comments?? critique of the system???

Hi Moondog,

I sold a nano puff here recently for $70 bucks brand new and then chipped in another $100 to get the hoody for $170 like yours. Noticed the standard nano puff always go on sale dirt cheap while the hoody always seems to sell for a premium for that extra bit of a hood?

I havent used my hoodie yet but did try my friend's nanopuff last year over just a patagonia R1 hoodie and found it worked very well. It's DWR was pretty very snow resistant and never wetted out despite falling on snow a few times. Even if it did wet out, you got the assurance it wont shrivel "down" like a "down" jacket. The hood gives you very good bang for your buck in terms of warmth for weight. I was truly amazed at how warm this primaloft one stuff really is. The brooks range jacket used the same shell and filling, except its more expensive and the colours are not so in-your-face.

we didnt have much wind so I couldnt really tell if its effective as a windbreaker. Your hoodie certainly gets my vote.

I would also recommend you look at getting an R1 hoodie as its just so versatile and goes with this really well. You might look like a bit of a doofus for wearing everything patagonia but I cant think of another company's merino hoody fitting so well over the face and so warm for its weight. I prefer it over icebreaker and macpac.

+ 1 for the Patagonia Nanopuff!

I have had a Patagonia Nanopuff pullover for two or three years now (the hoody was released more recently) and it's my favourite piece of bushwalking clothing. It's so light for its warmth (to me, the warmth is similar to a 200 weight fleece but at a fraction of the weight), packs up to nothing and definitely shows some water resistance (it is not waterproof) and wind resistance. It goes on every walk with me and I won't ever use a fleece again when bushwalking. (I can't comment on it's use for ski touring but imagine it would be excellent with a long sleeve thermal). I use it over a long sleeve thermal at night time or on breaks when it is cold during walks in NSW and add one more layer at night time in NSW winter. It's too warm in the summer months for use at night.

I'm definitely considering buying the hoody as well, the extra warmth afforded by a hood makes the small extra weight worthwhile.

Agree it is very slim fitting sizing, I actually went up one size from the size I normally take.

Cheers,

JB

I tried them both on in the shop
I wear a Large but to layer the nanopuff hoodie I needed to go to the XL, I looked at the R1 stuff but I can wait until my current zip-neck dies before I buy and my current combination of zippered polartec 100 plus the Damart Finnish cowl is the functional equivalent so YES I know that would work.
If only they were selling the Micropuff hoodie here

Well thats odd, I bought a size up XL hoodie. I could have put a pole in it and not needed a tent, was Huge!! I since noticed a few comments about their big sizing around the net...??
Nice jacket though, seems to be some cheapies around from what I paid (or sold it for).

I tried on the nanopuff jumper over a silk weight long-johm and the fit was close but not tight, I needed a XXl to layer the hoodie over the pullover, but funnily enough a Large DAS fitted easily over both Go figure, this is one time when you really have to try them on I think.

Do we need the extra warmth of the Micropuff here - assuming it is a top layer
I wouldn't be having this discussion if i could loose 12 kilos and get into my old gear.
