What is the value of an ebay item??

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

What is the value of an ebay item??

Postby Moondog55 » Mon 20 Feb, 2012 8:22 am

Patagonia DAS parka?
What is the real value of a second hand item, half original retail?
It's an auction site so what-ever the market will bid I know, but while I want one I do not want to bid more than it is really worth.
trouble is I have to buy through eBay as patagonia will not be making XXL sizes in the DAS parka for next year so second hand ones ( and New Old Stock ) have gone up in value.
A lot of the MARS stuff is now hitting the market and this stuff appears to be fetching a premium price, it is made with a heavier shell so it would take a little more abuse and I'm wondering if that is worth a little extra despite the extra 100 grams of weight penalty.
EBay is a funny place, my Kokatat sea-kayak jacket only got a few bids and sold for less than a quarter of new price ( new $740- sold for $155- ) but my Mont down trousers are already up to almost the original retail

Thats unfortunately (or fortunately) the nature of auctions.
AMong other things, it depends on how rare the items are vs and how big the market is. On rare items, I would happily pay more than RRP if I really needed the item. Those DAS parkas are very popular among climbers as a belay jacket so I'd say its price would be bumped up a little.

Heaters sell for more as soon as the cold winter hits while aircons fetch higher prices when the weather warms up. 2nd hand Motorbikes and kayaks rise in price at the onset of spring so I buy them at mid autumn.

I will probably have to pay a premium then to get the size I need, sometimes it is a real bugger being tall and long long arms

have you looked at other brands/models? The DAS parker is great, but it isnt the only of its kind out there.

I looked at others but thought that they were either too warm for OZ or too expensive.
I need it big enough but not warmer than my big down parka, I thought that the DAS was the best compromise on the market.

I just purchased a Mountain Equipment Fitzroy synthetic jacket. Used it in Japan at temperatures down to -20 with no dramas. It packs down pretty small as well. There is a beefier version called the Citadel if you wanted more insulation.

I got mine on sale for 129GBP http://www.joe-brown.com/outdoor-equipm ... black.html

Thanx Pinipowpow
I have tried it on, also a similar jacket from Mountain Designs here both too small in the shoulders and under the armpits but it is a nice jacket, the DAS is a very roomy cut which I need if I am to wear it as a layer over my shell, my shell is an XLTall

Is $150-USD a fair price for a DAS parka?

I am trying to get this with free postage and all was sweet until the seller realised I was in OZ

Remember though, not everyone can get to a retail outlet. Ebay isn't only for bargain hunters.

Suppply and demand, sometimes you get a bargain and sometimes you don't get as much as you'd like for your second hand stuff...taht's life
Seems to balance out over time

Sometimes you get some really rare items that you can't find elsewhere

I just don't like the exhorbitant fees, a small fee ok but not what ebay now charges.

We need an Australian craigslist that way everyone pays less!

That's fair enough for the DAS and fair enough to pay for postage from the States...esp for one small item
And I don't reckon I've ever gotten free postage except from Asia for really small cheap items
How would you like offering free postage (within Oz for say $10) and finding out the guy was from the States and it would cost $50 for you to send the thing?

I agree, I was trying to get a discount of $12- , as he was offering free express postage within the contiguous 48

i'll have to go through ebay anyway as patagonia have no more XXL in stock and are not going to be making this size next year ( personal communication with patagonia conirmed this )

Tried them all on when I was in NY last month, I need the XXL to go OVER my XL tall goretex parka. I need an XL in the Nanopuff myself, just the store would not sell me the last XXL in stock as it was on hold (for another climber)

So did you get it?

Keep an eye out on craigslist next time you are in NA...or if you are lucky you can convince someone to go to the hassle of sending one to you here... I remember getting an outdated pair of Schoeller pants sent over off craigslist from the States...worked out well for all parties

Hmmm?? get what exactly?
I just received one of the new US army level 7 PCU tops, half the price of the DAS in Alpha green.
Exact copy of the DAS parka except for the fold-away hood, it is an XL and just a touch too small, good value tho at $120- landed.
As for the nanopuff I was waiting for the end of season sale and no XL are left at the cheap price.h LOL

There is another L7 top called the "Linebacker", version 2 of the parka, much longer in the body and with a more generous fit, I want that particular parka, it would fit over everything

How about this as a DAS alternative?

http://www.backcountry.com/arcteryx-kap ... erralID=NA

on sale atm

Re the nanopuff, could try the Montane Fireball for a similar product maybe in a different cut? There is a retailer in Melbourne for you to try on

I think the arms and sleeves on those are a little tight, and for the money I am superbly happy with the US surplus DAS, evenif I really need the bigger one
