Where to get a good knife?

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.
Forum rules
TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Where to get a good knife?

Postby scubaseven » Sat 14 Apr, 2012 9:02 pm

I was looking at some Gerber knives today in a disposals store (had no money on me at the time), and thought should be no problem to get them online.

But looked through Ebay and some Aussie Gerber site, and no luck.

After a hunting knife, about 20cm long (blade approx 10-15cm), and sheath.

Any suggestions?

Around the $50-100 mark.

Spyderco are a top and innovative brand. Not really focused on hunting knifes but they cycle through models very fast and probably have some suitable. I have a great fixed blade fishing knife in about those dimensions made from a rare japanese steel that never rusts (even if left in the surf for a month) but holds a good edge.

They are smart enough to have established their own fan forum on their website which is very active and often critiques current models and offers ideas for new models (a number which are put into production).

They are expensive generally but can do alright through ebay with a bit of luck.

Spydies are great knives, but their fixed blade selection is extremely limited. They are also well out of the OP price range.

They seem good, but the one I thought nice was $200 and I can buy 8-10 Buck knives for that price.

I dont consider myself a knife enthusiast but somehow found about 10 in my collection.

my best low cost knife would be a mora 2000 which is about $30-$40. its abit below your price range, but it surely can compete with any other of my blades in the $50-100 range.
The green case it comes in feels cheap but the blade just works.

The one i use for hunting is a Fallkniven H1. which is slightly above your price range at around $150 US on ebay.. http://www.fallkniven.com/en
I would disagree on their claim on their webpage being the "best knives in the world" but they come pretty darn close. If you can afford it, i'd highly recommend paying that bit extra as the grip is very good even in the wet. Ive used it hunting boars and when all that blood spills onto your hands, you still have a good grip. They come in VG10 and 3GSPGS. I got the VG10 with the softer blade as I dont often use it, but if you use it very often, better getting the 3G that holds the edge longer.

Notice how the're both swedish. (I have a friend who believes no good quality gear comes from sweden and we continue this debate)

sorry, realised i didnt answer your question on WHERE to get a good knife.
just merely made 2 suggestions.

ebay USA is your reliable source, but there are cheaper alternatives out there if you shop around. theres always sales going on.

I do have a Bear grylls gerber survival knife, and would advise against it.
Ive got a Buck knife (flashpoint) and that seems pretty good quality too, but thats more of a climbing knife.

The Mora/Bahco is good value and available on ebay for around $22-

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bahco-2444-M ... 3cb1f74438
I go through one of these every couple of years and the value is very hard to beat, for bushwalking it is about all the knife i actually need.
I do carry more knife often but the little Mora is all I really ever need.
They take an edge like a razor and are easy to keep sharp and the plastic sheath is robust and lightweight.

If you're open to a folder. I strongly suggest you check out Sanrenmu. This is the factory in China that produces models for Spyderco, Buck, CRKT, etc. Very good quality and extremely well price. I carry the 710 model daily.

Agree and agree - but you can get lucky on ebay - even for new - and get into the required price range.

Thanks for the info.

I would have bought a Spyderco if they were around the $100, but not for $200.

Nice find on the Clippers - I've had several and they are great. Have never tried the carbon steel version though, so will be interested to know how they fare.

That buck is mighty heavy.

I've had no problems with knifecentre.com - got a couple of spyderco's with the non-rusting H1 steel blades from them. Worth a look, good range.

How do you find the H1 to sharpen?

Haven't got to the stage where they need a sharpen yet. One is a caspian salt - attached to my PFD - hopefully will never need to use it in anger. The other is a folder for general food related duties like cutting tomatoes, cheese, gutting/cleaning fish etc - so no real hard life (still slices tomotoes without effort - my gauge for how sharp my knifes are). I have another no-name heavier duty blade if I need to cut ropes, cords, whittle sticks, etc whilst in camp.

I found H1 sharpens ok - certainly better than stainless - and holds the edge well. But it doesn't sharpen up as well as good quality traditional carbon steel. I haven't been able to detect the 'work hardening' effect on sharpening mine - that is more likely my lack of skill than a problem with the steel.

My opinions are the same as mmondogs, i would spend the cash on a Mora , they have lots of styles but the new one i like is the model that comes with a firesteel and a sharpining system on the sheath this will cover your fixed blade requirements, have used a Mora blade for over 25 years and still going strong ,Fusiongear on evil bay sell them for $108 dollars au ,i also own spyderco, gerber, victorinox, kershaw Blah Blah,Mora, a really great knife.

This is probably not the answer you are looking for.

I take a red plastic handled "vegetable" knife out of the kitchen drawer and reduce the blade length and breadth by about a third with an angle grinder and sharpen.
Then I make a scabbarb out of card board and tape. The knife can be resharpened on any old rock.
I have had one for years. Very light and it doesn't matter if I lose it.

I met an old bushman one who said the best knife he owned was a "Western Castrator". He strongly recommended them. Googling the name reveals that they were made in England (Sheffield) and that the company that made them no longer exists. Could be worth looking out for in second hand shops. None come up on eBay.

Doesn't look like the most practical blade shape. Though for castration its probably perfect!

Which Mora knife to buy ???

http://www.cuttingedgeknives.com.au/sea ... ra&x=0&y=0

I want a knife thats sharp and can baton with it, but still be light, not sure if stainless steel or carbon steel is better for my purposes ????

Any help would be nice.

Cheers.

/PS I am leaning towards the Mora Bushcraft Series Force FT2060, just not sure if the stainless steel is the go ?

I've got a mora outdoor 2000 and it does everything required. You can certainly baton wood with it which i never do, so I find it a tad too big. Prices on your website seem high compared to when i last bought the mora 2000 for $17 a few years back.

The Forest lapplander 95 sure looks nice: http://www.frosts.se/products/adventure

Bismarck knives are hard to beat: http://www.bismarckmetalcraft.com/

Hand made in Tasmania. Not cheap, but top quality steel and custom made to your specifications. He'll also sharpen your kitchen knives properly when the steel at home no longer does the job.

(interesting swords and gauntlets too, but I haven't fought a lot of dragons or orcs lately)
