Tent - Hilleberg or Go-Lite?

Hi All,

After some opinions on tent options.

I'm 6ft 5, and my partner is around 6ft. Currently we are using an MSR Hoop tent, which is similar to the Hubba Hubba. Internal length is listed as 2.4m but closer to 2.2m once you sleep on one side of the tent. This is just long enough for me.

I'd like to upgrade to something more substantial and have the following options in mind, along with what I see as their pro's and con's.

After opinions on each option, specifically around whether we would both fit ok, being quite tall.

Hilleberg Kaitum 2
Pros

Looks quite room
Ventilation looks quite good
Large vestibules
Vertical ends which would help for internal space

Cons

Long footrpint for setup

Hilleberg Nammatj 2
Pros

Similar to Kaitum 2 but not as long

Cons

Internal sloping wall might reduce length too much

Go-Lite Shangri-La 3 (with a 2 person inner)
Pros

Looks roomy
Multiple options for inners etc.

Cons

Not sure how it is for tall people

Hi Nathan, i bought the hubba HP from you. Great tent, and thanks to your tall height i got it for cheap.

I've got both a Shangrila and a nammatj 3.
They're both very different tents and if you're just using it in qld, a Shangrila would be nice.
But for snow camping, i'd prefer the hilleberg for sure. The golite can easily handle the wind and snow load, but hillebergs are just much easier to set up in howling winds and its double wall creates a very nice cosy feeling.

with golite being so cheap now, why not get both?

I've now got a complete set of golite 1, 2,3,5, and a poncho tarp thanks to these sales.

I've seen some of the Oookworks inners for the ShangriLa which look great for solo use, adding vestibule space. Are there any two person inners that allows vestibule space still?

Also, how does the Nammatj go with interior length? Does the sloping end cut down much on space?

Have a look at bearpaw wilderness designs for a two person inner.

I have a shangri la, and am 6ft and the length is good for me to use without an inner. So am I not sure it is long enough for 6ft 5? If you have an inner with solid instead of mesh around the bottom it is probably ok, as you can pitch a pit higher without so much worry about water splashing under the sides etc ...

Also, how does the Nammatj go with interior length? Does the sloping end cut down much on space?

I find condensation builds up in that sloping end on my Nammatj. My sleeping bag gets a bit damp where it touches the sloping end. Would have been nice if that sloping end was not there. If I was to buy again, I would seriously look at the Hilleberg model with the straight ends.

Kaitum 2 with the straight ends, will certainly give more room and reduce the condensation build up at the ends.

Gday Nathan. Where abouts in QLD are you. Im in Brisbane and have a golite SL3. Your most welcome to take a look at it for size and fit. PM me if your near by and want to check it out. Great tent and I love it. Mind you Im only 5'6 so absolutely no help on the height side of things.

At 6'3.5" I can understand the issues you face. The Hilleberg Nallo is a good tent but too short for you, IMHO. The Katium is a great tent and my favourite but it is loooooong to pitch so not paltform friendly but I have always managed to fit it in somewhere. It would be the best choice for you. Not too sure on the weight difference but I have the 3 person one and it is great for two and can fit three ok. The vestibules are huge so you can store your gear at one end and still get in and out the other. Ventilaton top class along with build quality.

As no doubt you have struck, people less vertically enhanced may not be good at evaluating tent length. I use the longest Therma-rest of Exped mats and no issues there along with a 6'6" sleeping bag.

I am taking my family to Nepal later this year and have quite a shopping list.
GoLite would be great but I will need a forwarding agent, can you recommend someone?
Also will I need to do the order by phone to satisfy the companys requirements around credit cards?

PS Helsport makes some higher longer tents, see the Ringstind 2,
good quality at a premium price, might be worth a look?

These guys are good, charge US$8.50 for their service plus the freight cost.
If you're getting something like a tent it'll be free freightage from the outdoor store to Shipito.
