What do you use for a light in camp.

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

I highly recommend it (or one of the many other Zebralight models).

I agree.

Zebralight have just released their new light, the H502 - it takes a single AA.

WIth a Lithium Primary (such as Energizer Lithium):
- Weight is around 65 grams including battery.
- Maximum is around 300 lumens for an hour (that's not to far off a 60w ceiling globe in your house!)
- Lowest setting of 0.06 lumen (which is enough to read in a tent), will run on the single AA for 2 months continuously (that's 1440 hours!)
- 9 other different levels in between.

Can also be used with alkalines or NiMH rechargeables.

I have the predecessor the H501, and I have never come across a better headlamp for bushwalking (or a multitude of other tasks for that matter).

a mate brought a cd-sized "disc" light along on a recent walk.. it was coleman brand i think and looked something like this

Image

it made an excellent lantern/camp light with the middle light on and a full 1.5l mt franklin water bottle sitting on top as a diffuser. it wasn't particularly lightweight tho, and the outer ring of lights wasn't really needed.. so i am trying to find something a little smaller/lighter.

I had an ancient Petzl but my sister-in-law's dog ate it. Crazy poodle. So I got a Black Diamond Spot. It's light, bright and is perfect for reading in the hut/tent at the end of the day. Which is almost all I need.

I bought the Orbit lantern plus a Xp 2 headlamp, though I would like the Snow miner as a all in one solution will proably upgrade to that when available in Australia, On in my main kit and one in my emergency kit :)

Cheers.

I've got a small collection of lights for camp. Depending on what type of camping I'm doing.

I own a Black Diamond Orbit and the Apollo.
Fenix LD22 torch and a LED Lenser P7 Torch
A Princeton Tec Fuel headlamp
And a Petzl E-Lite. I also own numerous other Petzl headlamps, but there old and worn out.

The Petzl E-Lite I only just purchased.
On my overnight hikes, the Petzl E-Lite will be my light of chose. I only need enough light for just around camp and for reading E-Book from my hammock.

I've been using the original Petzl tikka XP for about 6-7? years now, I got one not long after they were released and its been a great little light, the only thing I wish it had is a red LED to preserve my night vision but thats only a minor quibble and I would get one again. I'm still suprised how such a small, light thing can be so vertsatile and put out so much light. I love how it can easily be hung inside the tent or from a branch while cooking as well etc

I have a hocus focus torch from led lenser as a lightweight handheld light but that stays in the car or in my pack for VRA rescue work as the headlamp does everything I need from a camp light.

I bought one of those brass UCO candle lanterns a few years ago because I thought it would be a good thing to take camping but apart from it being cool and a shiny (not bright) toy it's light output is minimal and its heavier and has more fragile parts than my headlamp so its now relegated to either power outages at home or as some extra 'ambience' when car camping.

The Black Diamond Icon is my choice for headlamp, while a nice little beauty I just found is great for off the head.
It's the Black Diamond Orbit lantern, 45 Lumens and weighs 84g.
