Just when you thought you had the latest. I mean, would such a release so soon be that surprising?

How soon?

Not surprising at all. Unless they perform a miracle, Apple is stuffed without Steve Jobs.

Here's a link ... I can't wait! I I'll be up camping out to make sure I am the first to have it.

Personally I am still happy with my iPhone 3G ... I'd hate to see people unemployed, seeing as I am myself ... But I only use my iPhone as a podcast toy. There is just so many more options available now with less "restrictions". At any rate, people will spend just about anything, to have the latest trend setting brand.

Not sure about the release date, iPhone 7 will most likely beat it. I was just joshing, but can tell you ... I not only left apple because of it's firmware restrictions and the like ... but because they can't make something with a name that lasts any longer than 6 months. I don't need the latest, I have just come to think the planet needs a new attitude.

No Offense Intended.

In all fairness ... I have not yet found a Media player in such a small phone so well set up as my iPhone3G.
Even though I choose to keep my mobile disconnected, I use it all the time for it;s audio capability. I have tried other phones since, but the layout and navigation of there media files was very frustrating.

I did make a move to tablets, with the 10.1" asus EEE transformer (reviewed as the Ipads Rival) when it came out, however found it a little too heavy for my overnight stays off track. I now use the Asus Nexus7 which only weigh 340grams. I find 7" is the sweet spot for reading. It's big enough as most kindle readers would agree. I seem to be able to hold with one set of fingers quite comfortably ... this may differ for those whom don't use their hands much. I can download third party software with that option in the settings ... no jail breaking required! I can also take along a PS3 controller to play stunningly looking games that rival my pc and still come in under the weight of my 10inch version.

Now that Steve has passed away, I believe apple have come to the party of a 7" tablet ... so no fear of people loosing jobs there. It's just a good sweet spot I find. I get plenty of running time on mine, can still hook up a keyboard and battery dock if I want, and overcame the no 3G/4G, with my trusty wireless mobile device that we share when out hiking ... if reception available.

What kind of gadgets you take on your trips...if any??? We also love to use a mini lcd projector...among other things.

I used to always carry my Macbook Air 11 inch. That stays at home now, I can do most things on my iPad mini. I have ftp client in there, fast keyboard app, among others, which lets me write html quickly. One has to be careful with the keyboard, its very easy to make a mistake with a relaxing of the hand hitting the keypad.

For connectivity, I use a 4G pocket modem, have bought x2 long life batteries for it, but one long life is fine for example- over a long, long weekend. They claim 12 hours battery life, I have found that figure to be conservative, about 14 hours is normal. The standard battery gave 4 hours.

Over Easter, we watched movies, played music and surfed the net each day, on the ipad mini. Fully optimised for energy saving... it started the trip at 90% and was still on 28% when we drove home. A lot of the great battery life comes from disabling and dimming where possible. The mini is a welcome addition to my kit, and replacement for my Macbook Air on treks.

Have numerous reserve battery packs and solar gadgets, bought one solar charger from Quickertek in the states, which charges the mac mini as fast as a wall charger- it keeps up with the macbook, almost, meaning the battery depletes very very slowly when the solar charger is plugged in.

At wifey's insistence, we also carry an iridium sat phone, the 9660.

No it wouldn't. Steve Jobs put a succession plan in place to keep Apple going up until 2015.

Can you please share some more details about what gear you have tried and how it performs? I am considering a iPad mini which could be charged from my solar panel (photo in this thread viewtopic.php?f=21&t=509&p=173067&sid=b5bf33c95ce8f06fe0bad0d9d3968497#p173067) so am encouraged by your comments above.

According to the latest gossip, Jobs completed the designs all the way to iPhone 8 before he carked it.

I think you mean before he resigned. He was no longer working for Apple when he "carked it".

If he resigned before he carked it, and if we assume that said designs were completed before he resigned, then by definition that must have been before he carked it.

I'm curious too, and by the looks of what quickertek offer, they are using a chinese generic battery pack(s), just rebranded, and their solar panels are just the 27 and 62w Powerfilm thin film foldable panels. A note to buyers of these, they require pretty good sun to charge at their "stated" rate. I own 2 different Powerfilm panels, and not as efficint as the Mono panels. Just to compare the cost of these panels, look at Powerenz. Also, you need to connect a small solar controller/regulator. The battery packs are not bad, but expensive for what they provide in Whr.
At $700 and $1000 for just the solar panel, you would want to be on some sort of long expedition!
