How do you carry your wine/spirits

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Or maybe four, as taswaterfalls.com suggests take a coopers bag as well.
Leave all four for three days or so - to give them a chance to suffer their own fate if they are going to, then have the wines assessed by the wine tasting group.

Stay tuned...

It's about time I let you all know how this went.

I performed the tasting as planned, using a wine of medium quality, yet one that not many in the group would have likely been very familiar with - a Rosemount Sangiovese.
As planned, three days before the tasting I poured one bottle into the PlatyPreserve, poured another into that bottle, and left the third bottle unopened.
They sat together at room temperature in our house for the settling time.
At the tasting, the wine from the PlatyPreserve was poured back into a bottle before pouring at the table so it was not obvious which was which - everyone had 3 glasses labelled A, B, C to match the label I put on the wines. I should also say that the bottle it was poured back into was the same bottle, washed and dried and also at the same temperature.
The tasting was conducted in the presence of in excess of 12 people - all regular wine drinkers who know their stuff.

The general consensus was that the best wine of the three was the one that came from the PlatyPreserve. A show of hands had most of the tasting group preferring that one.
The previously unopened wine was second, and the wine decantered from one bottle to another and recorked was third.
The unopened wine was closed, youthful, fruity. The decanted wine to another bottle was similar but had lost a little of its fruityness.
By far the one from the PlatyPreserve was the best, and even I was surprised at how this wine had changed by being in the PlatyPreserve for a few days.
The reason is simple - being in a slightly more permeable vessel for a few days, the wine had time to breathe and really open up and come alive.
There was no oxidation at all, and the wine was displaying no detectable negative characters because of being in essentially a plastic bag.

So, in conclusion, for shorter trips, the PlatyPreserve would do an excellent job, even to the point of accelerating the aeration and opening-up of the wine which would be a good thing unless you wanted to decant your '83 Grange into it. Don't do that, by the way - bring it here instead!
Because of the slightly accelerated aeration, I would be reluctant to try and push the timeframe out much further than a few days. But I may be tempted to try, and report my findings.

Port or muscat would be a completely different matter entirely, so if you were looking for a liquid to put in your PlatyPreserve for a longer duration, that would be my choice!
A 7 day walk, two people, that's about 50ml each a day - that's quite enough to finish off a great day!

Excellent work tasadam, thanks very much.

Additional use for Long Flat B Pack: makes great driveway cleaner-- not much chop as wine however! I guess good ideas have to start somewhere though. Think we'll ever see a Penfolds 389 or similar in a flat pack? How about an unbreakable Riedel glass. Now that WOULD be oneupmanship!

We almost always take some booze with us - having a partner that works for a wine company helps. I highly recommend (personal opinion  ) Banrock Station cab merlot in a 2 L bladder or Budnaked 1.5L bladder. All the niceness of an evening glass of red with out the glass or the need to decant from the bottle - its even good wine :D

I am taking the Budnaked 'sack' out for the first time on a 2 nighter next weekend. Hope they add a few more varietals to their repertoire in the future as the bag seems very sturdy (more so than the goon).

Just a quick heads up, I've had my Platypreserve for over 3 years now, still going strong.
In that time I've been through two Source 4 litre water bladders, granted they get more use. Upgraded to MSR 4 litre water bladder now, that I got from Macpac in Launceston amongst my Christmas booty.

Last year I bought one of these from Peak 62 when I ordered a GSI cookset from them. Postage was good and delivery was fast. They often bundle a couple of items together for a reduced price, so you can get good deals at times.
http://www.peak62.com/collections/gsi-o ... t-grenache
I have one of those dedicated Platy bladders too.
At the bottle-o you can buy small 250 or 300 ml packs of red or white wine. The contents are truly horrible, so pour it down the sink or use in a casserole. The container however is good, but you need a funnel to refill it. Good for a lunchtime walk.
(The small similar style yoghurt squishies for kids' school lunch boxes are good to refil for stuff like olive oil etc for camping too)
Stainless steel glasses are available too
http://www.peak62.com/collections/gsi-o ... anish-bota
and singly http://www.peak62.com/collections/gsi-o ... wine-glass. The base comes off. Haven't used them yet so not sure what they're like.

I love the look of this flask - may get it for hubby's birthday
They always seem to be out of stock though. Ditto for BackCountry.com
http://www.snowpeak.com/titanium-curved-flask.html - love the curves, but http://www.snowpeak.com/flask-titanium-m-t-012.html probably more practical

'If there was a way to keep Coke cold and fizzy during a ten-day walk . . .'
North- North- West - you may be able to keep a can of coke cold for a day in this http://www.snowpeak.com/titanium-350-kanpai-bottle.html, but sadly, not ten :?
Makes for a pricey drink though! (It also comes in stainless steel for half the price, and there is a neoprene insulated cover available as well)

Tasadam, I enjoyed the pics of your various 'watering holes'. I'd happily go walking with you any day!
And slightly off track - do you use a wine filter (not out bushwalking)?

I use a porter to carry my wine - that way the weight of the glass bottle is his problem. :P

I don’t normally drink when I’m trekking, however I have on occasion trucked in a small amount of overproof navy rum in a wine bladder. Overproof rum is a good drink because it,
• Makes a nice drink when diluted with cold mountain water.
• Tastes good even when hot.
• Can be used to make tainted water taste a little more palatable.
• Is relatively light to carry, as less of it is required compared to standard strength rum.
