Tasmanian Devils - Roadkill

Postby taswegian » Sat 23 Feb, 2013 3:59 pm

sadly I drove past a very dead Tasmanian Devil today.
It was very much on the nose but looked healthy (well before it died prematurely). Not that I really have much idea.

I took some photos, but post a couple of ones of its mouth which I gather gives signs of health or otherwise.
Others not so pretty.

It was taken on The Bridal Track just east of the junction with Beulah Road.

That was the first hint of one I have seen for a long while now on our roads around here.

I saw a few last year, but none, living or dead, this year. I've seen a few quolls though.

Definitely a lot more quolls around since the devils went into decline. Haven't seen a devil for about 2 years now - and sadly I saw that one a little too late...

I saw a very healthy one bounding down the shores of New River Lagoon the other week. I was shocked to see one at 12pm!

We used to see one every fortnight running along the shore of Table Head, Macquarie Harbour. Always at lunchtime, and always from South to North. He/She was obviously doing a regular two week lap of its territory :)

About 10 years ago we were nearly to the Fish River bridge on way to The Walls when a very small Devil flew out into the road, swung round to face us and leaned back on his haunches. He was making their usual raucous noise.
It looked so comical.
Quite a defiant stance.

I saw a wombat do something oddly similar coming when driving down the Murchison H'way late one night. Very funny indeed!

Was at Cockle Creek last Wednesday 20/2. Volunteer ranger said they had been seeing a juvenile there, and day walker came into the office there and said he had seen one there the night before.
