Leeaberra Track, Douglas Apsley NP

Postby Tas Tom » Thu 21 Mar, 2013 4:09 pm

Just wondering, has anybody walked this track recently?

PWS suggest the road in to the northern end of the track is closed and you can't walk the track from S to N due to risk of spreading phytophthora = the track doesn't get walked much??

Send Whynotwalk a PM - he has walked at least part of this track in the not so distant past.

Park is open, but yes it does state that you can only walk N-S to stop the spread of Phytophtora cinnamomi. This is just a management condition, it helps to control the places where the fungus can enter the area. I suspect there is a scrub down station up there at the northern end. Be sure to clean your gear before you go!

I've done the track 3 times, the last being some 7 or 8 years ago. The recommendation for as long as i can remember has been to walk from North to South as per the reasons above. The access to the north when i last did the walk was terrible. We were in a land cruiser and had to negotiate some monster holes in the dirt road ('E4 road via E Road') to the start of the track. Given the road isn't maintained i would think that now you would most likely have to walk it, or get someone with a serious vehicle to drive you as far in as they can before dropping you off. There are a few fire trails around Nichols Needle but access to the track from them is difficult and through farms before entering the park. Some friends of mine who live nearby have had a look at this but didn't get too far. I can't recall seeing any other walkers on my journeys through the track. Great views from Nichols Needle. Best part of the walk is from the northern entry point to Douglas River. Campsite near Heritage and Leabarra falls is nice as are the falls. Between Douglas and Apsley rivers is a good slog but all done in the last morning.
