Classic Tassie Huts

I've just been going through my photos that include Tassie's bushwalkers' huts. I was surprised how many I'd been to (and this is just a selection).

There may not be enough for hut-bagging to be what it is in NZ. But we certainly have some lovely - and not so lovely - huts around the state. You certainly couldn't accuse us of being soft I've written a little more on my blog http://www.naturescribe.com/2013/05/more-not-so-grand-designs.html

Yeah most are old sheds full of rodents, but a couple of them do look nice, like Ironstone Hut. Tasmania isn't touristy enough to need as many huts as in NZ or Europe, hence there isn't enough money to build beautiful buildings, most are made with bits and scraps.

Better that way Hallu than end up with the monstrosity that is Windy Ridge Hut! Most Tassie huts look very right just as they are, even if they are not classically beautiful. And with a fire going and your stuff spread around they can be quite homely.

I'll probably be roasted for saying so but I have to agree with Hallu. As nostalgic as some of them are, they could be far more functional, safe, better placed etc.. not replaced or if so with properly built, well hidden new ones... no, not like NZ either. (edit: nice blog and pics as usual though.. apologies peter)

Most of them are where they are and built they way they are because that's how & where their original users built them. It's not like they were designed or built as public shelters for walkers.

Nice to see a collection of our traditional bush style accomodation.

Trouble is the more refined our living becomes, the more we expect from our bush palaces.
That should not detract from the aesthetics though. Doesn't need to at least.

The Temple hut is worth a place even if it was demolished!

Classic piece today in the Mercury Saturday Magazine by Cannon on the newer Windy Ridge/Bert Nicholls Hut. How not to design a track hut. Apparently the hut's design has attracted a fair bit of flak.
