Hi Happy pirate,
You should definetely go for the hammock!
I guess you had a bad experience with the string hammocks and I agree that they are unconfortable and even sometime painfull...
However, I wish you to try parachute hammock, which as many advantage to a tent:
*They are authorized in the most of the beautifull places in Oz which are forbidden to camping, indeed tent is camping whereas hammocking is just a bivouac (experienced)!
*Protect you from the ground (wet, insect...)
*Lightweight/compact/no pressure point
*Resistant/200 Kg

The sweet hum of a 10kVA generator, LInkin Park on the stereo, roaring fire, pig dogs chained on the back of the cruiser, 6yr olds on motorbikes till 2am, smashing beer bottles - that's livin' in NQ

Thankfully you don't have to get far off track to escape it.

BTW - cover up for the stingers and you're good all year for kayaking.

Really? I'd be interested to know where THAT is written?!
Or is this just backpacker self-validation?

I'm reviving this topic because my proposed mentor nq111 seems to have disappeared. (was it something I said? ) So I'm back to gathering hammock data.

Just to add some input.

I was unsure about getting into a hammock so I bought one of the Tenth Wonder (actually I got my wife to buy it for me) hammocks off fleabay. Couldn't be happier. Here it is set up on its' first non-backyard trip:

Tree straps are tie downs I got from the local boot market.
Home made whoopie slings with integrated drip rings.
4 x Wire gate climbing carabiners. 2x for tree straps. 2x for Hammock ends.
Sleeping mat was a Big Agnes Insulated Air Core (long and wide version).
One Planet Down Booster used as a quilt (I'm a cold sleeper).
Tarp is a DD Hammocks 3x3. Great tarp, so glad I got it. Only drawback is it doesn't have catenary sides.

Since then I have replaced the 45cm motorbike tie downs I had in the gathered end of the hammock with 25cm climbing slings. The slings are much better.

I've slept on a 600mm wide CCF pad in this hammock and I have to say it was not good. I'm a full size bloke and had the classic cold shoulders and hips problem and I had trouble getting the CCF pad to sit well.
