TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Trekking Pole Extenders

Looking to find a local (preferably Melbourne) source for trekking pole extenders.
Application: Tarp and pyramid tent poles

This is the type of thing I am looking for:

Are these what are usually referred to as "pole jacks"? Might help your search. Do they have to be in Melb?

No but I have found with the recent $ fall, plus the way postage charges are tallied even when only 1 parcel is involved, plus everyone taking their cut from PayPal to the money exchange rate, overseas internet purchases are less desirable.

I have one from bearpawwd that I dont use. I just have to find it (moved yesterday :-) Ive only used it once in the garden to set a tarp up then realised I prefer my other setup (remove the end sections from two BD flicklock hiking poles and connect via a piece of alloy tubing).

No thanks. You can easily make those jacks with some tubing. I was after the joiner. Looks like I'll have to do an online purchase.

Isn't it just a section of tube joined between two poles?

Avatar,
Ive got both the 14mm and 16mm in carbon. Not a chance anyone in Australia would stock them.
Ive tried black diamond's strap attachments, MLD / bearpaws and other solutions and these are basically the most sturdy solution Ive found anywhere to join 2 poles together.

When I got them 3 years ago postage was much cheaper. They sell quiet a few things that are very hard to find anywhere else on the planet, and I recently bought a Tibetan Tanium 1100ml pot. Found out postage was 30+ pounds which Was over the top since it used to be only 11 pounds. I emailed them about this 200% postage increase and they gave me a code to reduce shipping down to the 11 pounds.

hope that helps.

Thanks ninjapuppet.
That saved me a lot of wasted time and effort.
I'll just have to fork out the online cash at backpackinglight.co.uk
Before I do so I'll check if they have anything else that is globally unique to add to the basket.

The Helinox site does not carry extenders.

I realise that they don't advertise them.

A few years ago I bought a pair of walking poles from them. I also asked them to make me a pole jack. In my case it was just a piece of tubing, and it was even free. But I found their customer service to be excellent and they were very willing to make the pole jack.

These days some of their poles use the twist lock system. It's worth asking to know if they'll make you what you want.

I ended up purchasing 2 types of extenders from backpackinglight.co.uk.
Arrived in about a week.

The 14mm extender has expanders and can replace the tip section on Fizan Compacts, taking the upper 2 sections of pole at each end.

The 16mm extender is just a tube. It can replace the middle pole section and take a tip section (with expanders) at each end.
The resulting conjunction of tip section poles is too short to be useful.
If you have very thin poles it will replace the handle section which is the best option.

Both very light at about 30g.
