Mountain Bikes on multi day walks?

Does anyone know where we we can find restrictions regarding the use of mountain bikes on PWS websites? Thanks in advance.

In the most basic of terms, bikes are considered vehicles and can only travel on roads. Is there somewhere in particular you were trying to get to?

I always thought that they are fine on fire trails but not "walking tracks". Of course, can't see why they can't be pushed or carried on said tracks, just don't ride them. CF MTBs only for the UL walking riders.

I think in the Tasmanian case a road is defined as....

road means –

(a) a road constructed with a surface suitable for the use of motor cars; or
(b) any place set aside by the managing authority for the parking of vehicles;

so I reckon that might allow bicycles on fire trails (unless signage indicates something to the contrary)

Good advice Phil. I reckon the Blue Tier is also worth considering. It has some great MTB tracks, with more planned I think.

As an aside, I was discussing with some riding mates the idea that a rail trail could be set up between New Norfolk and Maydena, using the now-disused rail track. The Derwent Valley steam train seems to have run out of steam ... (due to fire and insurance issues, I believe). Anyway the track is just sitting there rusting. Rail trails are huge on the mainland, in NZ and elsewhere. Having been on that train, I'd love to ride the track ... with the possibility of adding walks in Mt Field NP, rides on Forestry (?ex-Forestry) trails in the Florentine and Styx Valleys, and accommodation in the area. It could be a good employment boost in a needy area. Just a thought

The other good thing about rail tracks is that they are all very rideable. All perfectly graded that if a locomotive can get up, it's also good for cyclists. No killer climbs en-route.

Nice thought Peter but it could take a while to cycle that trail as you would need to stop off at Two Metre Tall Brewery (for a beer or cider), then Salmon Ponds (for a pancake), then Redlands (for some whisky) and I suspect things might deteriorate beyond that . If you made it to Westerway you could always sober up at the Possum Shed with a coffee and some local raspberries. You would certainly need to camp at National Park before heading off on the next leg!

Looks like a coupe in the Mutual Valley in the North East will be clear felled soon near the Blue Derby Mountain Bike Trail.

We have come across them a couple of times on the Adamsfield 4wd track.

You are supposed to get key and permit and pay $3oo deposit (refundable) for tjhe key

First time I visited Uluru (1985) a pair of Japanese blokes (uni student age) racked up on bikes, and carried them up to the summit and back. Jogging most of the way.
You'd think carrying a bike lock would have been easier . . .
