Displacement activity. Anyone else suffer from this?

Postby Hermione » Sun 13 Oct, 2013 9:00 pm

What I should be doing:
Working on my masters project so I've got something to show my supervisor this week.

What I actually did:
Went for a short walk in the bush close to home, stared aimlessly at the computer for a while, spent some time researching sleeping bags (in case the several I already own are not enough). Suddenly remembered that the trekking poles were still sitting in the spare bathroom after a trip to Tassie in July, clearly it was vital to take them apart for thorough cleaning right now (even though they had a pretty decent going over before coming home to Perth). Spent some more time staring at computer while day dreaming about possible trips, browsed this forum and wrote this completely useless post.

Result:
Nothing to show my supervisor, who I'm pretty certain is not a forum member (luckily for me).

Anyone else here have this problem?

Classic post-grad procrastination behaviour! Whilst completing my PhD thesis, the amount of browsing I did on bw.com was often positively related to the amount of work I needed to get done. Most often I spent time looking at the gallery and trip reports and planning future adventures. However, of course there was a decline in the time spent browsing as deadlines drew near. Though I am finished and moved on, I still visit bw.com on a daily basis, but the frequency has declined greatly and it is not a compulsive habit it once was! lol
Anyhow, apparently the time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time...or something like that...unless you are avoiding important work, that is! Good luck with your deadlines!

Oh, I suffer..

What I should be doing - studying for exams/OSCE's

What I did: clean hiking poles, researched ti cookpot prices, planned several dehydration meals, and made some more sourdough rye bread.
and I ate an entire baguette. (I realised that I lost 5 kg over the past month and should probably eat more...)

I also set up a pop up that tells me about a new bw.com post.

Glad to see it's not just me, though I don't think my supervisor appreciates this. OSCE's hey icefest I think you're on more of a deadline than me! Goodluck

Icefest, glad to see another sourdough baker. When I want to procrastinate I always find feeding the sourghdough starter and giving it a good beating pretty therapeutic. And if you set a sponge at night, then there are multiple opportunities the next day to knock back, knead and rise. All if which need to be accompanied by making a pot of tea. Great displacement activity when I should be writing a CV (something I haven't done for almost 20 years)

To be honest, my sourdough recipe requires little to no kneading. It is about 70 percent rye which means that it is very low in gluten. It gets baked in tins.
I could probable look after it a lot more. The amount of times I forgot to save some and had to resurrect some from my freezer is just ridiculous. I hope you are better.

Mine will survive in the fridge with no feeding for two weeks, then needs some TLC and feeding to get it happy again. I was away working for three weeks, so had reminders in my phone to call hubby to get it out and give it a feed for a day or two to poke it along. I keep a reserve bit of dough in the freezer if it all goes to pot and dies of neglect. Mine is happily bubbling today, and I'll bake tomorrow (I've been back home for five days, so it got some lovin')

I do tins or slashed freeform. I have a source for proper cane baskets, but haven't got around to ordering them. Let me know if you want a couple of baskets, wouldn't be a problem.

I have left mine in the fridge for months when I was on holidays. It takes a couple of days to get going again, but it's still been fine.

Baking today !
And planning an alternate walk now my six foot track plans are shelved due to fires
CV still not done
Various baskets of clean washing still not folded and put away
More fun packing up and weighing out a three day pack
Car not washed ( would just get covered in ash anyway, and dust from next week's planned walk)
I'll just water the garden with a glass of wine in my hand and plan walks in my head ......

Procrastination can be a very therapeutic activity in it's own right

Yeah me too! Tried to stay away but today while working on my search strategy I succumbed. Also used up some time researching the John Muir Trail which is on the to do list, then found Weigh My Gear played around with that using various combinations of gear (had to go downstairs and weigh my toothbrush, very sad!). Really do not think my supervisor appreciates my efforts in this direction and that's probably a good thing, if she was a forum member she'd know what I was using up my spare time on. :)

I like weighmygear, it serves a different purpose than geargrams, but I like it nonetheless.

Oh yes, I suffer, oh how I suffer

I saw this thread when it was posted almost two weeks ago and thought "yep that's me, I'm gonna respond to that"...

I have an exam in ten days that's worth 70% of the subject and so far I've put my study books in a pile on my desk, mowed the back yard, raked out the front, washed the car, clipped my fingernails, vacuumed the car, wasted too much time looking at the internet, fixed the cistern that's had a slow leak for about 6 months, opened and closed my study books, done a load of washing, etc  and as a last resort I'm actually commenting on this thread

This sums up my situation nicely I think

I've actually been awarded a PhD too - In procrastination. They said that I can collect my certificate as soon as I come down to pick it up. Maybe tomorrow...

When I was preparing for exams, my room was the tidiest it had ever been, cupboards all sorted, filing all done, bathrooms scrubbed.

I think I need to enroll in a course, just to get my house organised!

Yeah it works a treat, not a blade of grass out of place at my joint at the moment  I AM going to study tomorrow but if you need me to come over & organise your files, do some painting or just hang out let me know haha
The sad thing is that I work full-time & choose to be a mature (bahahaha) age student so you'd think that I'd be more proactive...

Haha! yes I do know mate and I expect the mods have our BBwp's (bachelor in bushwalk.com procrastination degrees) all ready to send out to us.. ahem.. mods?

mature students often still do most of the work, when i was at tech, half the class were mature students... most of the young students barely made an effort compared to the oldies.. procrastination is rife in a lot of students..

If you want something done, ask a busy person!

I know some people that prefer to employ working mothers, because they know they have to be organised to even get out of the house in the morning, and they can multitask.

Study week here has just finish and I haven't done any yet. At all. I got lots of gardening done though. And I never do gardening!

Time for me to start behaving like a "mature" student. Good thing my exam is near the end of the exam period.

I have not seen anyone with a serious leisure interest ie. Taking up most available personal time, have a neat and clean house. The clean households are the ones that have their vacuum cleaners on at 9am on weekend days and working the garden in the afternoon. These are not compatible with bushwalking and many other time consuming personal pursuits. When I've been out, it takes me a few days to clean out the gears and get everything stored again. They all eat into household cleaning time.
