Brown Mtn or Mt Brown??

Postby ILUVSWTAS » Sat 13 Jun, 2009 7:56 am

Hi all!!
Just wondering if anyone knows which of the "Brown" Mtn is the one mentioned in the peak bagging list from HWC???

I always presumed it was Mt Brown down at Crescent Bay but only recently clicked that it may be the much higher Brown Mountains up near Kempton.....
Anyone who has Brown ticked off their lists could let me know which one they climbed that would be great! thanks!! (maybe i'll just climb both...)
Nothing to see here.

Brown Mtn is the one beyond Campania (coming from Hobart) or can be accessed from near Levendale.

We accessed Brown Mountain from the Woodsdale Road, parking just next to the gated side road near the obvious quarry.
We walked up this road (with haste due to the signage!) as far as we could / as far as you can, before being directly under the upper slopes;
there is supposed to be a tagged route to the summit but we couldn't find it.
We bashed our way up the hill which wasn't too bad, generally not much in the way of bad scrub (a little cutting grass here & there).
At the top continue across to the trig station. We found a cairned route leading off the other side, tho not sure where it would come from exactly.
The 1:25k Buckland will be handy, or go to:

Unfortunately not much of a view from this one as you are in the tree line, & not a great deal to see anyway, but still a fun walk :D

Cheers mate.

I found 2 of the three in the Peak Baggers list (neither of which is the Crescent Bay one - sorry :| )
I haven't climbed any of them, so can't comment on that front either.
Maybe the map-sheets and grid co-ords might be helpful in locating them...

The one on the Peakbaggers list is the one in the Southern Midlands, as I described my trip to earlier.
Reference here:

Brown Mountain (792m)
1:100k map: Nugent
1:25k map: Buckland
Grid Ref: 431835
Peakbagger points: 1

Cheers.

I visited the Brown Mountain near Ellendale yesterday. There were some decent views towards Mt Field and up the Derwent Valley. Worth a point on the new version of the PB list.

Rohan
