Surely it can't be just the inexperienced and unfit that get into trouble. Lincoln Hall was left for dead only a few years ago. Though I guess one could argue that it was in part his fitness that ultimately saw him survive that episode. I suspect having so many relatively inexperienced people climbing over a short period does compound problems in general by slowing everybody down through some sections etc. Probably puts the experienced climbers in more danger than they otherwise would be.

no its not just the inexperienced getting into trouble but its now a higher proportion than the experienced because there are more people on the mountain than ever with less experience than has been the norm in previous decades. and yes the higher no's of inexperienced people is making it more difficult for everyone, the clock is ticking on summit day. your body is literally dying, the longer you spend at the higher parts of the mountain the more your health deteriorates, if you're not in top shape that can lead to life threatening health problems, not to mention the increased likelihood of having a serious accident brought on by exhaustion and or running out of oxygen... for a lot of people up there now, running out of oxygen can be a death sentence.

What I meant was, Look at the deaths each year in the last 20 years, and in the same time the amount of successful summits has skyrocketed.
And that's at the same time as the inexperienced people started trying...

It's perhaps important to acknowledge that the death rate is falling, both in terms of the total number of climbers versus deaths and also in terms of deaths per successful summit.

Prior to 2000 there were 1168 successful summits and 167 deaths ( 1 death per 7 successful summits).
2000 to 2006 there were 1897 successful summits and 38 deaths (1 death per 50 summits).
2007 to 2013 there were 3737 summits and 39 deaths (1 death per 96 summits).

Your chances of success have greatly improved. As wayno said, probably one of the biggest factors among others is the ability to know what the weather is going to do. Early climbers just did not have that luxury.
