Mount Victoria

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about the walk up Mt. Victoria in the N/E. Firstly, is it worth it? I've been told it's about 4hrs return, are the views worth it? Is the walk interesting? Where does the track start? And finally... I don't suppose anyone has any pics from their own walk up there?

You can find the track on the Mount Albert Road. It is well marked and there is a carp park on the opposite side of the road.
If you are entering Mt Albert road from the Mathinna Plains road it is only about 5 minutes along the MT Albert Rd.
I think they are good views and it is a varied walk with a bit of rain forest and some mountain vegetation.

Victoria reminds me of a mini cradle mountain when looked at from the car park. I didn't get to the top as I had company who struggled on the boulders. But it was as norts mentioed. .Mt saddleback is also a very nice mountain nearby which also has a marked trail.

My point is not about the points, rather seeking a pointer to the other points of walking to this point.

It's worth doing Mt Albert as well while you're there which is just down the road & has a (rougher, less distinct) track to the top.
I agree with SW, best peaks in the NE.
Victoria has some beautiful rainforest & is a nicely varied walk, for such a short walk.

Lol Oll, foster wasnt actually that bad, building that bridge was fun, theres worse peaks up that end of the state I reckons! It's only Foster denied us several times before we nailed it that made it seem so crap once we DID get there!!

Check the bridge is passable a few kms past Mathina if heading in from the south. I went to climb it 6 months ago, the road was closed and had to settle for .Mathina falls instead. I do a lot of tantric peak bagging, makes reaching the mountains climax all the enjoyble
PS Henry is the best in the NE

Well and truly worth it. It was one I was going to dash up and down just for the points but I got seduced by the forest and the fungi, and then by the gardens of flowering mountain rocket, and then by the boulders at the top (especially as I took the wrong route!). The views are good, but it's the mountain itself that is worth climbing. And as stu said, Mt Albert down the road is worth the stroll up as well.
I thought I had photos posted here somewhere but I can't find them.

Yep, track notes I have say "Mt Victoria with it's rugged appearance would not look out of place deep in the SW"

If there is a more beautiful, spectacular or satisfying 3hr. walk in Tassie I'd like to know about it. The vegetation is amazing, so varied and amazingly pristine, not to mention the spectacular rocky ridgeline. Well worth it.

Does anyone know if the bridge is still down? I'm planning Albert and Saddleback in a couple of weeks.

The bridge was fixed in December, A LOT of forestry up there so it was never going to be a long term thing!!! (You'll see what I mean when you go) have a great walk

A very beautiful walk, not without challenges but well worthwhile.

Does sometime mid/early last year count as lately? If so, then no, no changes to what was discussed here. Access is still very obvious, with a big sign and a carpark on the opposite side of the road, with a well marked, easy to follow track all the way up. And I'm sure it's still an awesome walk!

Only a couple of bits of very minor scrambling required, nothing really to worry about.

The start of the track to Albert was a little harder to find for us, as the position of the starting cairn seemed to have changed since Abels 1 was written (it was our first experience of this phenomenon, but it's happened a couple of times since...), so here's a picture of where we found it:

Hope this helps! We spent a few days up in the NE over that weekend, and knocked off Saddleback, Ben Nevis, Arthur, Barrow, West Tower and East Tower too. I enjoyed pretty much all of them except for West Tower, which was a bit of a trudge, and with no real views to boot! Oh well. Enjoy yourself up there!

Gee thanks, nnw It's just that I've had enough of fighting bauera & tea tree up steep slopes for a little while, and am hoping the track is still reasonably 'patent'.

I went a few years ago, track was fine, some scrambly bits at the top. Lovely walk, and there were gardens of multi-coloured mountain rocket on the way up.

Yes, the main track goes right past several caves that you could possibly overnight in.
