Lazy trips

Postby wayno » Fri 24 Jan, 2014 5:04 am

so i've got all these possible trips I could be doing that i havent, but i drift back to ones i've done before because,,,, they are easy.... less travel involved, easy access to the track. straight forward track. has some challenge to it but not a massive amount, easy under foot, no navigation required, trip can be done in most weather....
yes there are no end of other challenges out there but its a matter of motivating myself to take them on.
i'm also guilty of glamping these days

There is also the familiarity of known areas. These areas also probably hold fond memories, and it's good to revisit them. In the decades that I was leading club trips I invariably went to places that I had been before. Only when the trip was at the harder end of the range with suitable people did I venture to new places, and even then there were often some sections that I had visited before. This seems to me to be a good way to gradually expand knowledge of areas with reasonable safety.

My idea of luxury is to have a good sheltered campsite and chocolate biscuits. On one trip the second day had to be extended, camping beyond the intended spot. The third day involved an early start to beat the weather and reaching the destination about 9 am. The rest of day three was spent recuperating.

One of the joys of return trips is to observe an area change over time.
One foot in front of the other.

well even the change in weather.. last time i did the routeburn i didnt bother with taking my best camera since i'd shot it before, but there were still a lot of good shots to be taken in the different weather conditions.... they have started trapping predators there as well and the bird life is now flourishing.

I suspect many of us can relate to that. I tend to revisit the OLT every few years (in fact has been a while, so probably due to head back soon  ) and it always provides a different perspective (hailstorm on top of Ossa last time... record heat the time before that!) within in a reasonable level of comfort. It's kind of a walk that you do when you want to get out there, but can't be bothered with all the planning and exertion/discomfort that often goes with exploring new areas. That doesn't necessarily indicate a preferencefor returning to familiar, comfortable territory, it's just that sometimes that is exactly what you need.

And let's face it, there are worse places to keep going back to than the Routeburn  ... although the one time I did it I had sunshine the whole time, so I'm not sure if I have a need to return to get better views (same with the Milford and Kepler!). Would definitely do the Rees-Dart again though.

routeburn: regular shuttle, one hour bus ride from the airport to the track, you can get from major cities in australasia to the track on the same day..... great scenery, varied scenery. everything from valleys to alpine terrain.. bridged water courses.... back to queenstown at the end, great place to feed your face and wet your whistle...

I must go back for the allegedly spectacular view from the saddle. I could almost see my hand in front of my face last time. :)
