Hi- just fishing!
1. What sort of weather patterns are indicative of more prolonged stable conditions over the next month if planning forays into the Central Plateau e.g generally, how many days could you reasonably expect fine weather with a high centered to the west of Tas.
2. Apart from the huts e.g Ironstone, is there much degree of protection if having to bunker down around 40 Lakes Peak or lake Nameless for 1-2 tents.
3. Ideas of a reasonable time frame in/out to 40 Lakes Peak via Higgs welcomed

I can only answer part one. 

To that I say, it'll be very, very hard at this time of the year.

From that I suggest that the 26-29th look pretty decent: 



Next, you need to a look at the right hand column, and look at the long wave progression, This will tell you when the weather will hit the metaphorical fan and when you should consider bailing out:



Wait until next week, then you'll know how stable that gap will be.


This is very, very simplified meteorology but, IMHO, will double or triple the chance of good weather as opposed to not using it.

I used this method over summer and was able to nail a week with incredible weather.

Hi Blue Tongue
Its a day up the Higgs to Lake Nameless.
Solid day for average walkers
Small area of shelterd camping around the hut and some rougher stuff down by the lake
but otherwise not so good.
You will pass some nice spots on the way in.
The weather is always changing there.
Remember Byes Ballott law,
facing into the wind
your left hand points to the approaching low pressure system.
Generally just a day or sometimes two of blue skies in any week.
Don't go up if there are a series fronts incoming.

Thanks for replies. All good and noted. Obvious patience is the key this time of year and a steady eye on the weather maps. As well as the short and long term forecasts on WZ, BOM now have an interactive 7 day forecast. Bytes Ballot law is a newie to me and as mysterious as black holes and Fabonacci sequences occurring in nature. Obviously, any sailor worth his salt would know of it tho.Wednesday now looking good for the tops.(so far)
