Good to see you there tonight flyfisher but was all too brief - need to go on a walk with you sometime  Did you get your copies of DVD's 3 & 4?
Thanks sowestas for sharing your Vanishing Falls movie with tonight's audience as an "encore." It complimented Matt and John's story with a different approach to tackling a trip to Vanishing Falls.
. . . . and a BIG THANK YOU to pazzar from Mt Designs for all your assistance in setting up and running the show tonight - AWESOME!

We have been advised by Mountain Designs that their head office will not permit their Hobart store to sell tickets for the show, so an alternative option is being sought, and details will be updated in this thread.

"have their logo"? Do you think they have it on there for nothing? It's called "sponsorship".

If the LWC had generated so much "community spirit" I'm sure they'd have no trouble finding somewhere to sell the tickets.

For me, yes. It's a company bureaucrat's decision, so I've let the company know why. You have a problem with that?

If it is an event worth sponsoring, it makes no sense not to support it. Weird.

outdoor shops are usually keen to get involved with promoting events to do with the outdoors. it should be a win win for any outdoor shop if people are coming into pick up tickets for an event. more people in the door. people supporting the sponsors who support the events, more potential sales.
some shops host events in the shop themselves...

Exactly.
If I visit a shop specifically to buy tickets for an event, I'll usually buy something else, to show my appreciation for their support of that event. MD have just achieved the opposite.

It just seems a little extreme, that's all. We don't even know whether the store is a franschise or a company owned operation either- so who is it really hurting?

The problem I would have, if I were Mountain Designs, is that tas-man mentions the fact that MD head office won't allow a particular store to sell their tickets in the first place. How about a statement like : "lwc are looking into pre-show ticket sales with a range of outlets and businesses."instead ?

After the positive feedback in two posts (including by tas-man himself), a post which could shed bad light on MD is completely unnecessary, especially given the support MD has given this show over the years. These sort of logistical issues should be kept behind the scenes, not in the public forum, if one would like to keep sponsors (like Mountain Designs) on side.

To then get the boot in and mention that MD logos are being taken off the poster demonstrates little goodwill and a less-than-mature approach to a long standing sponsor by lwc. This action could have been done quietly, and most people would be none the wiser.

If tas-man published a list of all the other potential ticket sales outlets (UTAS, outdoor shops etc) would they too be boycotted and criticised for their lack of "community spirit"?

If you look at the old vs new posters, you will note that http://www.bushwalk.com was a former (but not currrent) sponsor. Any chance of boycotting them too?

To clarify the situation in this thread, the Mountain Designs stores in Tasmania are no longer franchises so the local managers report to head office in Brisbane. The new manager in Hobart was happy to continue support for DYKT but subsequently checked with head office who then declined to be involved. When the stores were local franchises, the LWC had great support in both Launceston and Hobart, but this era has ended and thus local support with it. The advice that Mt Designs was selling tickets was posted before the response from head office changed he situation, so my apologies for having to bring this up on the forum. Clarence is spot on that these situations are best dealt with out of the public arena, so I confirm that no negative publicity for Mt Designs was intended in these posts.

Re: LWC's "Do You Know Tasmania" Wilderness show in Hobart

So, can we clarify a little further tas-man?

The Hobart store is now run directly by the head office of Mountain Designs, meaning the store manager is not in a position to make formal agreements with regards to such things as ticket sales for shows.

(This arrangement is not unusual for company-run, as opposed to franchisee-owned, stores.)

This being the case, any discussions LWC may have had with the store manager never amounted to anything until approved by head office.

I wonder whether LWC ever had a formal agreement with MD to sell tickets for the DYKT show. Accordingly, there could not have been any change in the the "situation" regarding ticket sales, if there was never an agreement for them to sell your tickets in the first place.

Would your statement be more factually correct if it stated "the advice that Mt designs was selling tickets was posted before we checked through the appropriate channels."?

Was there any formal arrangement with head office to include their logo on the promotional material either?

This would not be such a big deal, except that you stood by and let multiple posters make a string of negative comments about Mountain Designs, and made no clarification on the matter until you were pressed to do so. Remember this is an organisation that (albiet under a different management structure) gave Lwc "great support" for the best part of twenty years.

You have now made it crystal clear that the era of "great support" and "local support" by Mountain Design in both Hobart and Launceston "has ended". I bet Mountain Designs appreciate your clarification of the situation.

Mountain Designs in Hobart has been a chain store for years, as I understand, and the only non-chain store was Devonport until it was closed down fairly recently. Can anyone confirm?
