how much gas to take

Postby mattburga » Tue 14 Oct, 2014 12:00 am

Not sure if I should have posted this in equipment or here.

I've had a Jetboil Sol Ti for a few months now, so only used it a few times. I plan to take it on the Overland next January (we're booked yay) and use it as the only stove for 3 people, walking 5 days/4 nights. I'd guess we'd using it for 3 meals most days, and morning coffee. We wont need to purify water with it.

So
3 people
3 meals a day + coffee
5 days

I have no idea how many gas canisters I should take?

thanks in advance.

Between 10 and 40 g/person/day.

Remember that the sol ti is prone to burning out of the heat exchanger if you use it to cook in.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.

Is that going to be practical? Poor number 3 is going to be waiting a long time for dinner.

Using an MSR pocket rocket a medium sized canister used 3 times per day doesn't quite last the distance and I've needed to start on the small canister I've carried in reserve.

We' may have to rotate on who is going to go 3rd ha ha

We're going to test some food packages before hand, especially the 2 serve Strive (http://strivefood.com.au) vegetarian packages. I've had the laksa and it was great but it felt like a big meal. So we're going to test if a 2 serve is actually enough for 3 serves.

Icefest could you explain that a bit more for me please?

Currently I've only used it with the cup it comes with, but plane to take my snowpeak saucepan on this trip.

Matt the Jetboil is only designed for boiling water and has been known to fail if attempting to heat food in it. The Ti model in particular.

You also void your warranty if you cook food or melt snow in the Sol Ti.

Just weigh an old, half full cannister, and then do a trial day where you use it just like your group will on the trip.

Then weigh it again at the end of the day and work out how much gas you have used. Multiply by number of days and get your total gas required.

You'll then need to remember to consider the net weight of new canisters, not the total weight, when working out how many you need. A 350g canister has 230g of gas.

If possible, buy two smaller canisters rather than one large one. They will weigh 50-70 grams more, but if the self sealing valve fails or you strip the threads on the cannister, you'll still have another one which you can ration out.

As others have said, get a different stove.
Cooking for lunch everyday is not something I would do and I would guess most others. It just easier to have a cold lunch. Especially in January when hot food on the trail at lunch time will be a bit too much. Save the gas and work out a cold option for lunch I say.
By the way, the only way to work out how much you're going to use is to do as SAH has said above. There is just too many variables involved otherwise.

I don't need to get another stove - because I knew when I got the jetboil sol ti that the screw on 'cup' was for boiling water only. But that the set is adaptable, it comes with a post stabilizer and stand for cooking with saucepans, frying pans etc. Hence I picked up a light snowpeak pot/pan set specifically for this purpose

So there shouldn't be an issue with damaging it. In theory I can boil water to make coffee in the Sol Ti cup thingy, then unscrew it (carefully) when we want to cook, and just use the 'stove' with my pots. Time is abundant on the trail so I doubt we'll be rushing for dinner. Good point about lunch though.

I think South_Aussie_Hiker is right.

I asked, because I'm pretty new to gas canisters. My other stoves are alcohol and hexamine.
