Hmmm - that's not all that simple! :? But I can't help thinking that we're seeing Derwent Valley fog. So is on Mt Dromedary by any chance?

cheers

I'm inclined to say somewhere on the southern parts of the Wellington Range.. looking south east off somewhere near Cathedral Rock.
Pity the picture doesn't enlarge.

Sorry about the pic size, you are correct about general location. Name of the track I am on would be handy. :)

Dont have the Wellington Park Map in front of me and can't find my trust Mt Wellington walks book by Hardy/Elson so i'll just guess Cathedral Rock track as its the only one named on thelist for that area.

Nah, the forums will have the answer.
The only thing more memorable than the views was the moisture. I think thats a clue

And the walk I took that day was descibed in the Hardy/Elson book.

I can see Frenchmans in the background. At first I was leaning towards the top of the Labyrinth, but I think you're further south and west. Cheyne Range?

I think its somewhere near the top of the Du Cane Range.
I think Mt Eros is in the Centre-Right, and if you could look past the left of the picture, you'd be headed towards North Geryon

Kramster has it.
Walled Mountain over my head... Eros behind me on a bit of an angle... There's a great little network of tarns in a slight plateau up there, i believe they are the headwaters of Cephissus Creek which runs through Pine Valley.
Onward!

Hurrah! Its a great walk up that way - the views are awesome wherever you look. Did you attempt the Geryon or suffice yourself with Du Cane Range?

Righto... the Game must go on...

Your shot is a cracker! and yes we got to the top of Geryon... some hairy moments and wasn't entirely convinced that my boyfriend was leading me the right way up the cliff face but we made it. I still can't believe I stood on the top of it when I look at photos. Such a great place.

I agree there's something very Mt Field about the pools and the geol., but Florentine is a fair bit lower than the mighty Field West. And the background mountain here looks higher (or is that just a perspective issue??) Is it nearer to Newdegate Pass?

Close enough whynotwalk.
There are a number of neat little tarns at the northern end of the Rodway Range, just near The Watcher (which I think is pretty close to / another name for Newdegate Pass). Looking southish towards Florentine Peak and Tyenna Peak.
Had a great walk that day (doing the Rodway Range circuit, back via Tarn Shelf, until boot-soles started falling off and we limped back from Tarn Shelf racing the sun... which won). I'm still yet to live down my knack of choosing a walks which end up taking far longer than initially anticipated... :)

You're up...

Thanks kramster - I smiled at your walking experience there. I took my older brother and his wife (not hugely experienced walkers) on the same walk but in the other direction. We had similar issues getting through the Lions Den and down to Lake Dobson before sunset. "We all got home tired but happy" as we used to write in compositions.

Okay - I promised something a little trickier. If you've been there you'll probably recognise it quickly, but not many go there.

Good luck,

Peter

I haven't been up there & this is a total guess, but is it Lake Youl on the Ben Lomond Plateau?

Yoicks! As soon as I saw "stubowling" I thought "oh oh - that didn't last long" :!: . You're absolutely right, which is amazing given you haven't actually been there! And you were too quick to have used Google Earth, I suspect. Just good old fashioned geography, eh?

We traversed the Ben Lomond plateau from north to south last summer. Went up via the ski-field and down via Stacks Bluff, which involved a long car shuffle. While not spectacular, it is wonderful country up there, with very few tracks. We camped and "swam" at Lake Youl (it's shallow) for a couple of nights. There are sizeable sand dunes behind the lake, created by the constant and strong winds.

Okay stubowling - all yours,

cheers

Peter

Yep, just a guess on that one i'm afraid Peter, but...

I spent the past weekend up the north east doing various peaks & funnily enough we were looking at the maps of the Ben Lomond plateau as a future walk (the walk you have described), including the fact that i'd heard there was a beach there, that was the give away - so thanks for the inspiring photo :D
I have been to pretty much everywhere else on the plateau up there, just not Lake Youl.

This one should not be too hard, I'm afraid I'm about to knock off so feel free to post if you get it (it's a named feature rather than a summit this time)...

I would, but there doesn't seem to be anyone around. I suppose I could always bag someone to be a proxy if no-one's guessing until tomorrow, though . . .
