Arm River Road Access

A friend of mine recently used the Arm River Road to access the Arm River Track and said that one of the bridges was out. This meant they had to walk an extra half hour or so to get to the carpark. Does anyone have any updates on the bridge? Has it been fixed? Or are there any ways around this, that will take you directly to the carpark??

Drive the long way around. It is a loop road, so you'll get there eventually.

I find that surprising. I know the bridge is out on the way to Rinadena falls, over the fisher river which adds an extra 45mins or so, but i'd be very surprised if the Arm river track was un-accessable.

I was wondering about that, is the fallen tree still on the road (was there 10 months ago or so) or is the actual bridge out of action? Are there any plans to clear the road to the Rinadeena Falls?

It is the bridge. Extremely unlikely it will be repaired.
Just allow an extra 2 hrs for the walk and be prepared for some road walking.

Arm River road has been diverted to using Maggs Rd. The road is blocked at the truck loading space not far from the main ART carpark. Nothing wrong with the bridges when I drove down it in December, just not able to pass the big piles of rubble. Maggs is only a few minutes extra, and you get there eventually.

Pazzar is correct, Maggs Road is the way to get in to the car park. Easy to follow and in pretty good condition; just turn left when the pile of dirt blocking the road lets you go no further and you are in the car park

Yep, this is spot on. Was up there on the weekend and had no issues getting the track start

Here you go Ninja, can't get enough of the place? I was sketching this for someone else going in. Just go in and out this way. I doubt there would be a tree still down (as was also rumoured..if indeed there was), hard to say. Probably more likely that they took the western road.. the 'low' road..

I was up there doing a food drop a couple of months ago. On my way down I met an OLT ranger coming up, he said that it was demolished as it couldn't hold over 5 ton (so it was seen as unsafe for use). He was under the impression that it wouldn't be rebuilt as it was an old forestry bridge. Same thing that happened with the Meander Falls bridge.

Maggs road is the new access.

I wouldn't say 'never'. The road was subsidised but is now closed to through traffic.

Yep, Maggs Road is still the way.

We met a very large and very lost bus in the Arm River Track carpark on Monday. Luckily the carpark was pretty empty and after I moved my car he was on his way after about a 7 point turn! So you can get any vehicle in there still

I will go off topic so you don't have to Simon What was the go with the contents of the bus?

Not sure, it was a big old bus converted to a massive camper van, looked like perhaps an extended family/friends on board.

I do not believe that the bridge will be fixed. Talk to Denis Maxwell - you can still get to the car park going to the long way round I think.

If taking Maggs Road in, watch out for the turn off on the left. From memory, there was no road sign at the turn off. In fact, there was; but it was located on the other side of the road and intended for those coming in via Arm Road. I missed it and a u turn was the result. It was about 2 years ago(?).

Just a quick update, as I couldn't see this mentioned elsewhere (though I didn't look too hard...).

Road access remains the same, take Maggs Rd all the way to the ART carpark, well signposted and easy enough to follow, easily accessible to 2WDs.

However, for those who were unhappy with the apparently renowned steep section towards the beginning of the ART, you'll be pleased to know that some kind souls have now turned this uphill into a set of switchbacks. Still have to climb the same amount, but it's much more fun, in a zig-zaggy kinda way. I was speaking to a ranger on the way back from P. East who thought it was Environment Tasmania whom we have to thank for this development. So, Thanks ET!

Or no thanks! I liked the steep climb.......

The track wasn't in bad condition, and was easily followable, so why go to the effort of clearing more trees to make the track marginally easier on the knees?

I agree, I'll be interested to see what it's like on the way up next time I go there...
