 In miniature. I'd planned to visit that part of the world. Long story but it didn't eventuate.

photohiker wrote:Old Faithful Geyser?

Yep. I didn't think this one would take long. We arrived there just as it was erupting.

Nope :) Hogwarts IRL is Alnwick Castle, Northumberland. It's in far better condition than this one, and it isn't on the coast.

Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven, north-east coast of Scotland. Apart from decay, wrecked by many? Apparently the Scots burned it to the ground at one point in history, then the Marquis of Montrose, followed by English destruction under Cromwell?

Spot on John. Yes, although there have been prior trashings, I was looking for Cromwell.

Obviously I was joking about it being Hogwarts (never seen any Harry Potter films) but thanks for the link photohiker. It's amazing how many films and TV shows were filmed at Alnwick Castle. I honestly thought Hogwarts would have been computer generated.

Thanks Michael, Scots history is very absorbing. My one trip to Scotland was a long time ago but didn't get to that part. A return visit is on the bucket list.

That's it. One of the short easy walks in Yosemite Valley, it has a great view of the massive face of Half Dome (out of shot on the right).

While we're in the US, where am I? (might need some clues, it's probably a fairly obscure location although there were plenty of people on this short walk)

It is in the south west, and it is in the Mojave desert - or at least, very near the southern boundary.

This walk can be easily accessed from a small desert resort-style town. In fact, I hired a push bike while I was there to reach it.

OK, clue time... the nearby resort-style town is a short drive from LA... when I visited there was a giant statue of Marilyn Monroe (I assume it is still there)

Palm Springs being the resort town? Don't know the MM statue though. A trail in the Palm Desert? So many options there.

Big Morongo Canyon Preserve? One of the short trails there - seems to be quite a few of them? Little San Bernardino Mountains in the background?

Palm Springs is the resort town GPS.... according to google the MM statue is no longer there

Much closer to Palm Springs than Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, I can't cycle that far!!! Actually it was late in the afternoon so I visited the closest hiking area with the shortest possible trail... but still didn't make it back into town before dark.

Thanks, looks interesting. I didn't get to Palm Springs unfortunately - next time. So many places, so little time :(.

A little offbeat, where are the locals having an afternoon snack in the US?
