Klymit Static V2 Sleeping Pad on MassDrop - bring it back?

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

It doesn't have many advantages that others don't beat (hands down) however the X frame was on: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/klymit-ine ... e?s=klymit and iv'e seen the short version on steep sale elsewhere. The short version is a tiny light package, didn't get on with it initially but it's actually proved it's worth, overnighters where you'd reconsider carrying a full camping setup- this thing, a light bag or quilt and bivy together around a kilo and footy size package. Take some tolerance to get comfortable but much better than closed cell foam. Nice option to just camp anywhere or on a whim.

I just bought one of these and tried it on the Jagungal loop. By far the most comfortable matt I've tried for my dodgy back. Never tried the X frame or the thermarest version though...
However even with a roll of closed cell foam underneath they are still colder than a thermarest type foam mat. Next time I might try the closed cell foam matt on top.

Under is intuitive with extra prick protection, for warmth, on top is the G-O.

My first thought was if you have the closed cell on top, you lose the insulation value of the sleeping bag filling the gaps in the Klymit....But....with the closed cell on top, the dead air created by the Klymit between the ground and the closed cell would possibly make up for that. ??

Similarly, wouldn't the R-value be enhanced by the quality of insulation on the bottom of the sleeping bag ?

It seems HP has this V solid version (without 'loft pockets').

From using the x frame style here and there, i'd say that going to a more insulated pad when needed would be a better option than trying CCF with these. The loft pockets do seem to 'work'.. as in the pockets are not noticeably colder than mat, but then the mat itself isn't insulated so only warm to a point. Still playing with them but have tried and it may be an idea to let the bag 'hang loose' underneath as you lie down, otherwise the material is tight and down compressed. Personally, I only use a +4c bag so often on the edge of coldness, it's interesting how little adjustments matter.

That said, pretty impressed with the newer Thermarest mats (ie. neo therm) for an all-rounder.

Yeah - prickleprotection was the added reason for placing it under. Never entirely confident of the durability even through a tent floor...

I have been eyeing off this mat for a while. The comfort to weight ratio seems very good. I also like that it is 59cm wide rather than the usual 50, but at the weight of a regular size mat. I currently use the Exped Synmat 7 UL LW which is 600 grams with an R rating of 3.5 or so. This is 463 grams, add a 150g closed cell foam mat like this and you have a similar weight system with a reasonable R-rating and comfort, added redundancy and the ability to use it by itself in summer. I think I may get one and play with this combo.

Would you put the foam cell mat underneath?

Under or over shouldn't make a huge difference.

Whilst I haven't yet tried it I suspect that over would be noticeably warmer.
Losing heat into the open air pocket (i.e. the mattress) allows it to disperse through all it's exposed surfaces.
Having a foam matt between the sleeper and the air mattress means little heat makes it as far as the 'lossy' air mattress.

just a guess

That's a good point. I guess the question is how great that effect is compared to the overall heat transfer to the ground, the earth being a far better conductor than the air.

I've joined the drop. Exchange rate is a bit of a killer at the moment but $75 shipped is still worth it imo. Certainly far cheaper than anything you'd find locally.

Im thinking of jumping in on this one. Anyone know what they are like?

I have a Exped 9 synmat as a main mat but Ill let my wife use that and I am thinking Ill get one of these as a the spare second mat. Its r value isn't as high but it appears comfortable and at that price.........

Never mind, I've done some research and Ill spend the extra $40 and get another Exped.

From what i read they get differing reviews on their comfort and by way of design of no isolation in those big welds, they are cold for their rating. And mass drop is USD to by the time its converted this drop is not so much the bargain i thought it was, unless of course you were looking specifically for this mat.

They are probably only notable in relation to the $ for V2 standard mat.
Personally, i'm still just looking for a mats that hold together (unlike exped) and are universally comfortable (unlike t'rest) :)
(this may not be 'the one' either :( )

Ouch, I hope mine doesn't do that!! Can I ask what sort of activities it took to blow the welds apart like that...........

It's not my pic Dan, I do have some pics (on here) of the old model (we had) where 8 of 12 eventually did that. Some said it was an 'old school' problem :|

You could treat them with kid gloves, this may help.. misuse could have contributed to the above?

The 'reason', in our case, was inadequate design parameters by the company. User error was cited, arguments made, counter-evidence given, the bottom line- all 8 were replaced under warranty.

Actually, iirc it was 7 separated, the 8th had a neat split along the join seam. In the end they (Exped au) were ok about the warranty, not so much 'fault' (user error isn't really a good defense), they were more concerned with storage, age, transport, batches.. 'potential' i guess.

There were also 4 that had no problems.. :), they may still be ok as far as I know.. their owners may be defending their purchases to this day :)
Really, generally (maybe that 'batch' aside), if $ don't play a big role in buyer choice then mat blowouts aren't a concern either. Weight and comfort win.
