Might be something prehistoric about this location.

Yes, that's good enough Graham. Not sure about the valley part but I was looking for Mammoth or Mammoth Hot Springs.
The wildlife in Yellowstone NP is amazing. This is literally outside the front door of the Mammoth Hotel where we stayed for a week.
The bison would wander over most afternoons and it was hard to maintain the park regulation distance from them at times.
Buildings at the rear are part of historic Fort Yellowstone dating from late 1800s. Military personnel acted as park rangers for a long period following poor civilian management.

Thanks John. It was a bit of a guess and Google images that led to that name but I'm not sure that's what I was looking at.
However, again in USA, what park/reserve was I in. If you can what's the common name for this feature (on the left.)

Probably a few more than John Wayne, too. This feature was referred to as The Three Sisters. It reminded me of my wife and her sisters - same sizes and shapes, too.

UK. Beside which notable lake am I camped. To make it easier, water level elevation is a little above 900m.

Yep, we went up on the cog railway. 14,110 feet ASL. Highest place I've been outside an aircraft. Many on the train had altitude sickness. Gave me a mild headache but otherwise OK. Snowbound and brilliant views.

No, but it looks worth visiting. I might need to add it to the bucket list. What prompted you to go there?
Some strategic googling to zero in on it - often works if I have time. Probably helps that I have an analytical job.

Staying with the maritime theme, might be too easy but where is this National Recreation Area site managed by the US National Parks Service?

That's it, I thought this one would go quickly. I wasn't particularly interested in going there (my wife's idea) but found it absolutely fascinating and could have easily spent much longer than the half day we had.
