Western Arthurs Traverse in April

Postby hobbitle » Wed 25 Feb, 2015 5:28 am

Hi all,

A group of 4 of us are wanting to traverse the Western Arthurs (probably A-K) around Easter (4-12th April). We are all experiences and not adverse to the adventure of rain and a bit of snow. But I just wanted to ask if we were TOTALLY insane?

Understood that Tas weather is totally unpredictable too but, any thoughts on April would be great.

Also wanted to know if my MSR Hubba Hubba 2pax would be OK?

Cheers!

I think a Hubba Hubba would be fine for the WAs. Of course it could be tested under extreme conditions but if the weather forecast is that bad you wouldn't go anyway.

May get a fair bit of wind in April, but it's not like it's August :p If you guys are all up for it and know what you're doing, check for a decent forecast etc as anybody usually would, no reason you couldn't do it.

I have a Hubba Hubba - not the most stable of tents, in facts its come close to getting flattened more than a couple of times in Tassie.. so I'd be careful about where you pitch it.
In fact I've retro fitted mine with extra guy ropes because the standard ones aren't enough if it does blow.
Most camp sites are sheltered, I think high moor could be an issue if it blows from the right direction.

Having seen far greater tents shredded in bad conditions - if it's looking super nasty make sure you are somewhere sheltered / adjust plans accordingly / don't go.

Saying all that, I just too mine through the Arthurs in January and had 8 days of lovely weather and camped up high in exposed spots with the views - but knowing the weather forecast was good.

Many other options if you come to Tassie and the forecast is lousy for the WAs.

Hi again all.

I was wondering if anyone can forsee any issues with 5 of us each having our own tent over Easter in the Western Arthurs in terms of tent sites? Are we likely to run into issues?

Probably going to have issues, not guaranteed but likely.
Likely to be a popular destination around then, unless the weather forecast is horrible...
Unless you can fit all your tents onto a single platform - spreading out across the sometimes limited space is probably going to be a bit of an a-hole thing to do.
All you need is yourselves, a commercial group, a few randoms, another group or two all expecting to camp on the platforms and you'll have issues.

So you may need to look for alternative camping options. As often the areas immediately off the platforms aren't that nice.

Or you can share tents between two or three.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.
