Help choosing an Easter walk in the SouthWest

Postby DanShell » Thu 19 Mar, 2015 11:47 am

If you were going to do a walk in the South West NP somewhere over Easter where would you go given the following criteria.......

It would be a late start Friday.
I would ideally like to head back home again Sunday at some stage but its not critical, so that gives two nights, possibly three.
I won't be doing large klm's in heavy terrain.
Ill most likely be on my own.
I am not overly experienced.

I would like a little sample or taster if you wish of the area.

Thanks for any advice. Mnt Anne circuit looks like an obvious one but it appears as though Id need to walk around 9 kays on a road to complete the circuit??

EDIT: Mnt Anne circuit will take me longer than 3 days....

Mount Anne circuit in 3 days is an easy thing to do if your comfortable with a little bit of scrambling. Leave out Anne summit and you save a bit more time. I have done it solo in 2night, 3 days easily. Having said that if the weather is forecast to be a bit dodgy then don't bother as the section after the shelf camp through the notch and down to lonely tarns would be a nightmare in bad weather.
I just left my bike at the end of the loop and then rode it back to the car, not too hard.
So I would say don't rule out Anne but have a plan B if the weather looks bad.

Mt Anne circuit is pretty doable... provided you have a plan for tackling the notch.

Getting back to the start, its only 9km ~2 hrs easy road walk with/without a pack and the chances of scoring a ride aren't too bad.
Otherwise I'd chuck a bike in the bushes somewhere.

It'll be pretty busy in there too unless the weather is awful, plenty of people around so you probably won't have to worry too much about being solo.

The other obvious option is Frenchmans Cap.. that'll be super busy.

Snowy Range - It's only a few hours up to the Snowdrift Tarns under Nevada Peak, so a late start would be fine. You could spend the middle day traversing the ridge down to Snowy South, and then walk out via Wooley's Tarn on the Sunday. Again not the nicest place to be in bad weather though.

Thanks everyone.

Ill have a good look at the maps of the areas in the suggestions on the weekend and no doubt be back with questions.

I really want to do Mnt Anne but I am not sure I am ready for that on my own. The weather may dictate what i do over easter.
