Grail Falls, Chalice Lake & Tent Tarn

Hi all,

Looking for opinions....

Looking to make it in & out to Tent Tarn via Moses Creek Track & up over Grail Falls.

I've been into Grail Falls previously, with plans to carry onto Chalice Lake, but the day was average, so didn't carry on any further than the falls.

so....interested in opinions......is this possible in a day..?

Moses Creek track is no problem, but i'm not familiar with the track past the falls, around Chalice & up to Tent Tarn....

Grateful for any & all feedback.!

Not that far - I don't see a problem. Except maybe crossing the creek up on the plateau after lots of rain. As long as you don't stuff around for too long trying to find the right track/pad (see my post below). Cairned route to Tent Tarn.

But you miss the prize of camping on Cathedral! In good weather that is...

There are a LOT of tracks/pads around there, with tapes everywhere, some of which are not helpful at all.

As you arrive at the campsite, head straight ahead through the dining/lounge area with the logs to sit on (see pic), towards the falls. Follow the pad upstream to where you can cross the creek. tapes on the trees the other side of the creek lead you to the steep scramble up to the viewing rock near the top of the falls. From there it was easy enough to follow.

Thanks Tortoise, reckon I might have been on that pad, but wasn't sure where to cross. Time was against me, so I didn't spend too long looking. I'll head straight to it next time

I vaguely remember a biggish rock on the near side at the crossing point. And yes, you end up going up to the left of the falls, but you can't see them till to get to the clear flat rocks above the top of the falls.

Yes - you climb up on the true right side of the falls. The hard part is stuffing about a bit in the forest just below the falls. I found bits of tape and ducks all over the place that did not link up. Once you locate the right place to scramble up - then the route is quite straightforward and quite well marked by ducks all the way to Tent Tarn.

Yeah, can be fun trying to find the right way up. Took me a good fifteen minutes after I put the pack down to find the proper creek crossing. Get that right and the rest is easy to follow.

As long as the rock on the climb isn't icy it'd be a great place to visit in winter. I want to get back up to visit Dean/Vicar etc, and just to camp up there again.

(I can't extend that offer to an overnighter at the moment - too many commitments). However, I must warn you, I'm one of the world's slowest walkers But it looks like there are others keen, no matter what time of year

I guess that it is my perception especially as you needed to ask, because when we did it even with Multiple GPS in action it was not easy to pick up the pad to Tent Tarn .
I understand that you are familiar with the Moses Creek Track to Grail Falls and you now have directions to the start of the track however unless you are an excellent navigator and fast walker I would not personally chance this as a Day Walk.

I'd agree, though probably more from the perspective of making the most of this walk. Your going to want to get up to the peaks for a look, tent tarn itself is nice but the views to the west (from further west) are a highlight. Iv'e been in twice and not used a track, it seemed easier just to follow the outcropped ridgeline (that it looks Tortoise is standing on above) along from above the falls. There looked to be a dry boot crossing of the creek not far above the falls? Otherwise you can wade across up near the lake. If the creek is raging you can walk up around Chalice Lake, it takes time to get around all the inlets but not to difficult. Camping up there, especially out near the edge, is at its best!
