Re: GAME: Where Am I? (Continued)

Postby eggs » Sun 20 Sep, 2009 9:54 pm

After my lazy guess, I did put in a bit more thought.
My tools are google maps in terrain or satellite mode - though the name of the location comes up in maps mode, and the LIST.

Once I twigged it was coastline with a nice field along the line of view rather than a dam wall  I started to look at the big picture of Tas for 2 large heavily wooded mountains very near the coast. Starting from the Tamar I rapidly moved down to Mt Elephant when all of a sudden it twigged that it was probably Maria Is.
Having confirmed the 2 large peaks on the island with the right line up - it had to be on a certain westward facing beach with the mountains behind. Afterwards I noticed a small swamp area just back from the beach which also seems to be captured in the photo.

I was a little frustrated to find that the satellite view was not high res in that area - so I could not visually confirm the existence of a weather station there.

Anyway - in keeping with the theme

Thanks for the explanation eggs.
Your new pic:
The sand , sea, clouds, houses, rocks and shadows say NE Tassie.
I tried to google the answer, (using dialup) but the mountains are wrong.
I will give up for now.

Its not NE Tassie
See how far across the picture you can follow the line of sand - it may give you a clue.

Hi eggs

Could it be SW Tassie. On the coast near (just north of..) Trial Harbour?

The line of sand would be Ocean Beach, then..

Cheers

Dirk
Yes it is the walk along the coast north of Trial Harbour - some lovely granite cliffs and boulders along here

And Ocean Beach stretches all the way to Maquarie Harbour

But I would have called this west coast rather than SW

Hi eggs

Yes it is. I was reminded of that picture when you put up the slide of an empty frozen Lake Mackenzie a while ago.
Taken off the dam wall, mainly to try and capture the way the light reflected off the ice.

Back to you.. :D

I did notice that the tree line in the background was uniformly horizontal above the lake - implying it was a hydro lake which was not full at the time.
What was corny was that I happened to be in Google Earth, and after I put up this suggestion, I went to Lake Mackenzie just to check if the lay of the land really matched.
And there was your photo posted against that site!

This should be very easy. Apologies for the photo - I had forgotten to reduce the ISO after taking some shots in dark places - so it is a bit grainy.

Yes - I was glad my wife insisted we continue along the lake to do the full OT.
Echo Point was delightful - both a balmy evening, glorious moon rise over the lake and then a moody mist on the lake in the morning which eventually burnt off.

Yes, I love Echo Point. I've only been stayed there once myself (quite recently), but I'll definitely be going back again and again.

OK, this next one will be very easy for anyone who's been there, and quite easy for anyone who hasn't been there, but who does a bit of a search through the forums. What a hint to start with!

Certainly is. I thought that one would go off quickly. :-) Those rocks are quite distinctive.

I couldn't work out what that awfully jagged bit coming off the side of ..... was.
It was only when I married one of my pics up to the same profile that I could see what was missing.
I haven't been down and across to Mt .......
Though I have been to .... Peak 3 times.

I reckon you were probably close to the arrow

Would you like to post next geoskid?

Noone has said it yet - but the photo was from the saddle between Hartz Peak & Mt Snowy.
Hartz is the close by peak and Mt Picton was the key profile ILUVSWTAS had left in the photo.

Edit: Not sure whether geoskid will get back - so anyone feel free to post

Sorry eggs - didnt see that. I hav'nt got around to looking into how to post a photo yet  I'm sure it's not hard - I will make a point of doing it in the next couple of days. Also would'nt know how to get rid of Exif data. As far as guessing goes, with 90-95% of photos posted I would'nt have a clue where to start with the limited number of places I've been. I do follow the game regularly and thoroughly enjoy it. I shall extract my digit and skill up.
Thanks to the regulars for 'carrying ' the game.
