Rehabilitating an old sleeping bag

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Aware of those problems I lifted the wet sleeping bag while in a laundry basket and gently rolled it onto the wires and this was after gently squeezing out the excess water
Baffles ripping out without the stitching also being ripped is usually a sign of them not being folded over before being sewn.

I'll be interested to hear what they used for baffle material, the noseeum mesh we have nowadays seems very resistant to fraying without being folded over. If it's like you suspect and they used strips of nylon fabric then the edges would be vulnerable to fraying.

Age isn't the primary criteria. Time in use, conditions, exposure to UV, etc. -- that's what matters.

My first sleeping bag was disintegrating after 23 years. It had lost much of its loft. And the shell could be pulled apart by hand. It wasn't a cheap bag but it saw a lot of use.

Same happened to my old Everest mummy. Never took care of it and it copped a lot of the worst - heat, sweat, UV, blah blah blah. (The blah is a real killer.)

Habitat for wildlife
Actually I am highly allergic to kikuyu grass and have to suit up to cut it so it doesn't get done all that often, been trying to kill it for years but we keep getting re-infested from the neighbours

OK
Having opened up the bag and cut it down as originally planned I would say most of the problems were caused by original poor manufacturing design choices made to get the bg to markets at a particular price point
After washing and much tumble drying the bag has relofted well and will suit the Tadpole well
