Bay of Fires

Postby cams » Thu 18 Feb, 2016 10:54 am

Hi All. Planning to spend a couple of days in the Bay of Fires area in a couple of weeks time. Any suggestions for the nicest (quiet, secluded) campsite to go for? We will be in a hire car 2wd. Also, suggestions for walks to do? thanks in advance.

Humbug Point has a good set of tracks, with the possibility of also rock hopping around much of it. My favourite part of that area.

Maybe not sufficiently secluded, but if you drive along the road the The Gardens there is a campsite at the Northern end of Cosy Corner North with a magical view - classical BoF.
Rock and beach walks to the North from here are very worthwhile - worth driving to even if you don't camp there, but do beware waves on the rocks.
You can also walk along the beach a long way to the South, though it's not as spectacular.
Also drive to the end of the road just beyond The Gardens and walk North.

In case you're beached out before running out of time I have to mention the Blue Tier/Poimena inland from St Helens. The road is rough but accessible by 2WD. Check the rules for your insurance though.
It's totally different from the coast but quite beautiful, lots of variety, several walking tracks, and usually few visitors.

If you get a chance to check out the Weldborough Hotel while your in that neck of the woods I would recommend it. More of a pioneer museum than a pub. And a good excuse for a cold frothy one while your there !

Yes, it's a beautiful area and not at all what one expects to find up there. Worth the drive.

The Blue Tier forest walk is also worth visiting. It's maintained entirely by volunteers and they do a brilliant job.
