The Abels Volume 1 Reprint going to happen

Postby tasadam » Tue 02 Jul, 2013 11:18 am

Good news everyone!
I just got off the phone with Bill Wilkinson and he has advised me that he has decided to do a reprint of The Abels Volume 1.
Besides Bill himself, I'm the 2nd person to know, and he has asked me to announce this information here, so you heard it here first!

It will be a different revision to the existing Abels Volume 1.
There will be some updates to notes, and photos.
I will have more information soon, but I can tell you now that you have the opportunity to assist by way of written text and photographs.

Of course such submissions will be recognised - I believe that means your name in print, not sure what else yet - early days.

Stay tuned for more information.

You should clarify in the topic title that it's a project, it's not being released right now, some people might be disappointed upon realizing that, I got confused with the "It's Here !" topic.

Hey, how about adding $10 to the RRP and donate it to wildcare?

OK so here is the latest, straight from Bill...

Some comments for your consideration.

I have decided to do a new edition of The Abels Volume 1 and am inviting interested walkers to feel free to supply images for consideration. The original scans in the book are too dark, so the new edition will feature an assortment of some previous images and quite a few new ones.

If you have any comments re the text in Volume 1 with regard to Abels you have climbed please let me know. You may wish to submit some text for consideration which may fit in with the general existing structure of the essay in the book.

Information may include:

  • Natural and cultural values and features that weren't previously mentioned
  • Plant occurrences not mentioned
  • Track re-routing or upgrades that are significant
  • Different starting points
  • Access
  • Amendments

If you have climbed an Abel not so long ago and feel that the text is still appropriate as presented in the book, please let me know as well.

If you are climbing an Abel in the near future through to summer next year, please keep these considerations in mind.

Indications of interest can be forwarded to Bill Wilkinson:

Bill.

They're still working on it. It should be going to the printers fairly soon - in October, I think.
One of our forum members has been involved in writing special articles for it, and quite a few have been asked for photographs.
An update will be posted when things progress to the next stage.

This is very exciting if it will be out in October! Do we have evidence of if hitting the printers soon?

I am on many waiting lists for the original. Rare as hens teeth. Anyone want to part with theirs? I'll pay handsomely! :D

There's one somewhere on the route out to Marriotts Lookout (with a bonus 1:25k Maydena Tasmap), if you're willing to scrabble around in the scrub for it. Although it will probably be mush by now . . .

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm trying to work out exactly what the abels supplement is... I have the two main books now and I was under the impression that the abels supplement was a reprint or maybe corrections for the first volume. Is that correct, and is it even available ?

Not sure if it will hit the print by October, but almost certainly by the end of the year. Speaking with Bill a couple of days ago he said there was a few finishing touches to go, but it wasn't far off.

Also, how much do you want to pay for an original - I just got my hands on a mint condition hardcover copy of it, so for the right price I might be willing to part with my soft cover edition, which is in very good condition.

A small 50 page booklet that outlines all the Abels, no in depth info though. I am sure I saw a second hand one in a bookshop in the Quadrant Mall in Launie the other day.

Sounds useful still, thanks for the tip off, they had no abels books last time I tried 1

Bill posted to his Facebook page that he had found a misplaced box, containing a small number of Abels volume 1.
It might be worth contacting him via http://www.theabels.dreamhosters.com/ to see if he has any left.
I got lucky an scored a soft cover and hardcover mint condition Volume 1.
He is using this find to help fund the release of his revised Volume 1, due at this stage as soon as in the first half of this year if all goes well.

Good as it would be to replace the lost copy, I'm happy to wait for the new edition. Can't afford to buy the old one as well.
