Pronunciation of Nereus

Postby Tortoise » Wed 30 Mar, 2016 3:18 pm

I was intrigued about the 'accepted' Australian pronunciation of this infamous mountain, as I've come across 3 variations of it - as is often the case when taking words from one language into another. The nomenclature board of Tasmania apparently doesn't do pronunciations, but a very helpful teacher of Greek Mythology at UTAS votes for NE-ri-us.

My attempt to explain it without using phonetic transcription:
the first syllable is stressed, the first vowel is the one in 'net', the second is the one in 'reed', and the last vowel is the common unstressed 'schwa', as in the vowel in the second syllable of 'famous'.

Just in case you were interested. Yes, I'm seriously procrastinating today.

That's one of the options - but not the one used by the UTAS Greek Mythology lecturer. Not that it matters. I'm just a phonetic geek, and now I know which version I'd like to use. :)

Not even for the wedgie?

Ne-ray-us is what I thought it would be, to go with Pro-tay-us. Or Ne-ree-us & Pro-tee-us. Stress on the second syllable. Although I'm no expert - it's all Greek to me.

What about Geryon? Most people seem to pronounce the G as J, but I'm fairly sure that's wrong.

Well, that killed any chance of having the correct pronunciation across the Aust community! LOL
