Might have been Mt Bevan unless you were coming down from further afield?

Looks like you have identified the valley. But you are on the wrong side of that arm.

Here is the view of the actual mountain from a dunny 1/3 of the way up......... (apologies but yes dunny views are a passion of mine so I'll always bring my camera if warranted!)

Too. Much. Information.
I just don't need to know that there are people out there who always take their cameras into the dunny with them. For whatever reason.

Each to their own..... Lotta good views from the loos!

Not French. Although we had a great view of Mt French which was directly opposite the valley (just off the right hand side of this shot, taken from the hut next to the dunny)

Yep you have got it Eggs, Barff. The purpose of putting nnw though his pain was to hint at where the photo was taken (ie near Liverpool Hut)......... Yes and highly recommend the hut, its propped up on a pretty cool spot. We had an entire rain/snow day in that hut - one of those times when me hauling up a bottle of rum was most appreciated by the climbing party!)

I'll be boring and stick in NZ - which iconic ridge am I climbing (naming the mountain will also suffice)?

I'm a little surprised no one has had a bite here. Then again the landscape in the guts of the south island can sometimes lack big give-aways.................

The trouble with the south island is that it has so much landscape.

Could this possibly be Ball Ridge?

Yes Rome Ridge it is, going up to Rolleston.

On the way down I took the Rolleston/Avalanche traverse so I did partially descend via the Avalanche Peak ridge......

NZ. see how exact you can get with my location, if you can i don't just want the general location. you may have been in the area but i'm well off any official track, in a place where few people have walked in summer, at least it they are sane..
theres a hut in the photo, can you fib it and name the hut as well?

Nice shot.
I think I can see 2 buildings - Whangaehu Hut and the Dome equipment shed.
So you appear to be on a ridge running east from Ringatoto Peak - below the 2123m high point.

The hut is intriguing. Is it for the Tukino ski fields, or is it for observing the volcano?

eggs, you need to find a hobby you suck at for a change
pretty much correct, its an alpine club hut, thats why its next to a cliff.
dont do this in summer, thers so much loose rock its treacherous to try and get any further up. m mate said his mate had made it up but didnt check which season it was..

It helps to have been to a place.
We had an eventful walk up to the Dome hut and the Cathedral Rocks skyline was my clue.
On the way up I had kicked a path across a seriously steep icefield and on reflection, it was a bit risky.
But my daughters really started to freeze up on some of that really loose gravel and I hurt my back when some rock broke underneath me as I was directing them on how to manage the climb.

But we managed to get to Glacier Knob, and from there to the Dome. Coming back down in the now softened snow was delightful.

Staying in NZ.
