Mount Rufus / Shadow Lake

Going to do a simple overnight walk from Cynthia Bay to Mount Rufus to Shadow Lake. Overnight at Shadow Lake and then head over to Hugel / Little Hugel / Forgotten Lake and then back to Cynthia Bay.

Can you please advise:

1. It the track across the top of Rufus is well marked?

2. Is there somewhere to camp at Shadow lake?

Yes to both Roger.

All the tracks are well marked and easy to follow in that area, with the exception of Mt Hugel.

Note that there are 3 tracks descending from Rufus... Shadow Lake, Cynthia Bay, and Gingerbread.

Yes, and if you spend nearly an hour walking down the wrong one from the summit, its a very frustrating walk back up to get back on the right one!

We walked it a while ago, one of the best short walks that I have done in regards to views vs effort.

Plenty of camping at Shadow lake.

Looks bad, but that tree has been there for years. But I suppose it's gotta go at some point hey...

No, just not very observant. Once I noticed the tree (you can't tell in the photo but it was a windy day) we packed up and moved to another site, just to be on the safe side. It was a nice spot though, aside from the Tree of Damocles.

We saw a platypus swimming in a little pond on the way up to Rufus the next morning.

no mistaking the top of Mt Rufus.... the cairn on top would pass for a major cenotaph..... I think you'd still want to be careful with navigation on the ridge top in bad visibility the ridge gets broad and the potential is there to stray off the track, its not that well marked along the top..

The three routes are largely 90 degrees apart. Hard to go with the wrong one.
