Cotton kills. Do not wear jeans if there's the slightest possibility of cooler, wet conditions.
My favourite heavy-duty trousers are Mont Lifestyle zip-offs. Plenty of pockets in the right places, versatile, solid material, reasonably quick drying, good fit for those of us who are a little more substantial in certain bits of our anatomy (ie: the *&%$#!), and a waist where the waist is rather than somewhere down on the hips. Not sure what the male version is, but there is one. For warmer conditions without the really heavy scrub I get stretch pants from Mountain Warehouse. Again, good fit, albeit a bit closer (but the stretch makes up for that and it also means they're less likely to snag), very light and quick drying.
What works best for you will depend on the sort of walking you do. Lighter materials are fine for tracks and more open conditions but generally don't last if you do a lot of scrub-bashing or scrambling.
