Undies

Hey all, just interested in opinions. I'm off for an overnighter in a couple of weeks and expecting it to be warm this time of year. I have got chaffing a few times before in hot weather when wearing loose fitting boxers (not while bush walking, just in general), and have since switched to the more fitted Under Amour boxers. I've done a number of day walks and not had an issue with those, but just curious if I should go perhaps consider taking 2XU compression shorts for over night and longer trips, or is that a bad idea? What's your experiences and undies of choice!?

I used to use compression shorts but have now changed to the “Step One” undies. They do actually perform as they say in the annoying ads.

I use icebreaker undies, combined with 3B cream it’s all cool down there!

The brand doesn't matter, just wear them inside out and feel the difference.

I use no friction balm, can buy in outdoor stores. Works really well as otherwise my thighs get chaffed from 2nd day onwards. A good daily wash is also important.

I use merino boxers.

you could go without, from a fungal growth and comfort perspective there's a lot to be said for not having warm, moist material pressed against warm moist folds of flesh.

however, this could be Chafe and Seam Hell of the worst order or a beautiful, breezy experience depending upon your choice of trousers....

I have Scottish heritage. Bushwalking kilt it is!

I'm guessing going commando wouldn't work for me given the results of loose fitting boxers in the past.
My mate in the army also recommends the Neat 3B cream to help with chaffing.

This is one of the few items on my "to improve" backpacking list, i.e. chaffing.

I've started to use a little backcountry bidet thing to freshen up at the end of each day - think like CuloClean, but from an 80 cent bottle from AliExpress. Seems to have helped greatly.

The only other thing remaining is irritation from the liners of my running shorts. This usually happens if I'm doing longer days (40+ km). I'm planning on testing out compression shorts (not too much spandex though), and just the compression shorts. My logic is that if this is what people in ultramarathons and adventure races do, then might work well for me.

I picked up the same technique during my time in the Army Reserve nearly 20 years ago. Continued to this day. I find underwear so uncomfortable. I could never go back.

Also against regulations if my memories are correct, issue item was an UL fine cotton boxer Very loosely fitting.
Personally I have found chafing to be a pants design issue and pants with a large crutch gusset help a lot, the deeper and longer the gusset the smaller the problems are, especially if the pants are also on the looser side or with a good amount of stretch built in.

Maybe in summer but when the cold wind blows I want a hygiene layer in my long handles
