That would put you smack bang in Tekapo.
Don't have enough in the foreground to decide if it's from the Sheepdog Statue or the Old Stone Church.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.

Tekapo it is. I think it's from outside our lakefront motel before or after walking to the church and the sheep dog statue.

Still in Aotearoa (that's New Zealand for the politicians who don't know who Split Enz are)..

We stayed a few days in Fox Glacier and visited Te Moeka o Tuawe the first day in cold, miserable, rainy weather.
So didn't get such a clear view of the backdrop. They actually closed the walk next day due to extreme weather.
Had better weather another day up the road at Franz Josef.

I was super lucky when I was there!

We even saw a massive rockslip happen onto Josef Glacier! Saw the rocks fall and then 5 min later we were enveloped in a cloud of rock dust with visibility of 50m and the smell of angle grinding!.

919 views and not a single answer despite the obvious clues. Looks like I've broken it again.
Before I declare this dead and buried, does anyone wish to have a guess?

Vuelta a España finished close to the start (& end) earlier this week.
It's 22km out & back between two small villages & is considered Spains most beautiful walk.

(and there was a clue in the above post)

I looked this up last night but was hoping someone else might jump in. I think this is Cares Gorge in Spain. Looks like a spectacular walk. Are you still over there Keith?

Well done. Ruta Del Cares needs extreme care. After the first 300m of gentle climbing over 3km from Poncebos, the remainder is a level walk to Cain - all of it v. spectacular in a tight gorge. Much of the 6' wide track is immediately adjacent to 50m+ drop-offs with not a single guard rail. Several tavernas/cafes at 11km mark in Cain catering for the hoardes - we got the early bus (8AM is early!) so avoided most of them.

Back in Oz now - however there's lots of remote tracks in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picos_de_Europa calling me.

Getting colder, although we did fly to Colorado later in the same trip.
But this general location could be considered monumental.
And I might be descending a stairway to heaven, of sorts.

Thanks Turfa. It took a bit of research and deliberation between Island Pass and I think a lake near there.
Despite my signature block my only experience of the JMT is a short walk on it from Yosemite Valley.

Staying in the USA. Name the foreground locality and the nearest background feature:
