Seeking Interested (or Interesting) Bushwalkers with Stories

Postby WollemiAdventures » Fri 09 May, 2025 11:47 am

Good Morning All!

My name is Liam - 25 years old and born & raised in the Blue Mountains.

I've been making short videos on my outdoor adventures over the past year-or-so; covering areas in the Wollemi, Kanangra and greater Blue Mountains region. I have a particular passion for canyoning and bushwalking, and although I love climbing too - I am very average!

As I've gotten older, I've started to appreciate the history of these regions and the interesting stories of the bushwalkers that navigated them. I'd love to make a series of short films, in a documentary-style format, speaking with passionate outdoorsmen and women, discussing their journeys and adventures through the Australian bush. Unfortunately, I can't offer any financial compensation (as I don't plan on making any money from this series) but can offer a lift, free lunch, and the opportunity to have one of your stories immortalized in a publicly available video that can be watched and shared with family and friends. I am very much a novice film-maker, with some of the gear and a little bit of an idea, but don't want anyone to expect the next Nat Geo documentary.

I'm hoping to see if there is anyone on this forum who lives a couple hours from the Blue Mountains and that has an interesting story about an adventure that they've undertaken in the Australian bush - preferably older stories as opposed to more recent adventures. My plan would be to spend a day filming you as you discuss the adventure and memories you have, before completing the same hike/climb/canyon/whatever trip myself, with the footage to be combined into a single documentary-style piece.

Appreciate everyone's time and I look forward to hearing from you.

I've always loved this story! You could see if Sleep Train is interested in talking about it.

The other kind of story I'd love would be to hear about the adventures and exploits of Gundungurra, Dharug and Darkinjung athletes pre colonisation. I always daydream about that when I'm out running, climbing and canyoning.

Ben Artup spoke at an event called Adventure Time a few years back and this attempts at the Grose were covered as part of the stories he told

Wollemi Adventures: I suggest you get along to the Tom Williams talk on Tuesday night. Tom did a lot of exploratory walking, climbing and canyoning in various parts of the mountains such as Kanangra and Blue Breaks, and also Wollemi long before it became known as "The Wollemi". He was a bushwalker with exceptional climbing skills, and a true gentleman. Tom and his friends from several clubs did a lot to ignite interest in exploratory bushwalking. I'm sure there'll be a bunch of them there on Tuesday.
