Please ID These 2 Locations Near Dove Lake (warning photos)

The two photos attached here are of my first visit to the Cradle Mountain area. I remember this particular walk quite well. My immediate family plus my grandparents walked right around Dove Lake (the youngest aged about 4, I think), and this was before there was the easy low level track. We had to walk up the Ballroom forest, across the face track, and over Hansons Peak. That was the only track around Dove Lake at the time.

My father has recently been scanning in some old slides and will start on his old negatives soon, but he sent me the first batch last week.

I'm pretty sure these two photos are Dove Lake, although one of them might be Lake Wilks. However, I can't quite match up the images with other images of Dove Lake to definitively identify the precise locations. Ie, is that one on the beach on the east side of Dove Lake looking west towards Marions Lookout/plateau, or is it from the West side looking east towards the Hansons peak ridge? I expect the latter, as I don't think there was any track near the lake on the east side at that time, but I'm just not sure. And I can't place the other one at all.

Can anyone find and post any photos that have matching rock/vegetation/scenery to these ones to help me pinpoint the locations please?

(I was thinking of posting one of these in "the game", but thought it would be a bit unfair since I couldn't be sure of the precise location, myself).

Gosh Nik - working on photos to figure this out when it eventually twigs that your 2nd photo is reversed!!

Now I have to mirror image it..

Definitely the small beach near the Ballroom Forest..

And your first picture is also reversed!! - but it is our lunch spot on the Twisted Lakes - a little bit off track after coming over Hanson's Peak

oh, dates... um... I think they're mid to late 70s. Looks like my sister there is about 4 or 5, so around '76 I think. Just a very rough guess.

I do remember staying in old units at Waldheim on that trip, and they were quite ordinary back then too! I remember that after this particular walk, I suffered excruciating abdominal pain all night which in hindsight was probably appendicitis.

Wow, that King Billy on the Twisted Lakes photo hasn't grown much in the last 30 years!

Hmm 76 - I first went there in early 80. Been 5 times all up so far.

I seem to remember there was a thread once about seeing reversed images on the web.
I still have a copy of a Cradle Mountain shot from the web that had been reversed.
You may want to check how your dad is setting up his scanning.

This was a nice exercise - I still think that the Cradle Mountain area is one of the most compact spectacular areas of Tas - and people on this forum get put off because it is so commercialised??

PS - the one on the right is definitely Pencil Pine (from a closer shot of the foliage) - so I reckon yours will be Pencil Pine too

I noticed you edited your path to say through the Twisted Lakes rather than over Hanson's Peak.
Below is a map ringing the "lunch spot"

I think you might deduce from this that you were indeed about to head over Hansons Peak, rather than through the Twisted Lakes

I'm pretty happy with you confirming for me that I did the more challenging route at about 5 or 6 years old too. I can't remember it well enough to have been sure until you pointed that out.

Wow! Those pics sure bring back memories for me. The earliest bushwalk I can remember is the Dove Lake circuit which, as you say, was a tad tougher back then. I was also 5 or 6 years old in the mid 70s and we did it the other way around to you going up Hansons Peak first then down via the Ballroom Forest. "100 Walks in Tasmania" by Tyrone Thomas was the standard text for that era. My family also stayed in the Waldheim Huts several times through my childhood.

100 walks was my first ever walking book... along with a Kurt Saxon survival book i think.....
