With in an hours drive from Burnie with a view?

Postby walkinTas » Sat 11 Sep, 2010 10:00 pm

My sister is home from the Mainland and asked me to take her walking this week. This is the brief I was given - "Day walk and I don't want to have to drive any more than an hour to get there, and there had better be a view worth walking for".

Valentines Pk was my first thought - if the creek is crossable. I haven't walked the Dial - so don't know what the views are like?

Open for suggestions!

Mt Roland should fit the bill.

Thanks c ! Maybe I'm getting old, but I don't think I fancy walking up the face of Roland again. But it definitely fits the criteria. :)

What about Rocky Cape NP, the Broadview Hill circuit starting from Sisters Beach. No peaks as such and there are views for most of the walk. You could also do the side trips to Doone Falls and the 2 caves.

Just to piggy back, you could take her up Mt Claude, good view but without the climb up the face.
It is easier to go down a hill than up, but the view is much better at the top.

Isn't there a much easier alternative route up Roland?

Mt Duncan will give the best views from the Dial Range. Pretty easy to get to as well and only involves about a 300m climb.

Leven Canyon floor could be a good option.

wT I guess you dont literally mean the "face track" up Roland as the walk up O'Neils track is quit civilized and should be readily doable even for an "oldie" like you

Bell Mountain?

There's plenty of scope on Roland without the face track.
Along top of Claude from lookout on Olivers Road and then across Vandyke and Roland, or loop back down off Vandyke to Gowrie Park - would need 2 cars or long walk back.
Not much view today though

Thanks Everyone. Turns out she hasn't been up Roland, so we might try that on Thursday or Friday. :)

In the end we went to Winterbrook falls. ....but your suggests were all good an a big help so thanks!

We had intended to walk up to Blackbluff as well, but conditions weren't good. There was a very low cloud cover over the falls and mountain. There was snow on the ground at the falls lookout, but the falls were hard to see behind the mist and cloud. When we got to the falls it was so windy that the top part of the falls were blowing horizontally in the bigger gusts. With no possibility of a view and such strong winds we decided to head back to the car.

I was happy - great four hour walk. My sister was disappointed she didn't get a view.
