I'd suggest 'not much' in the majority view..? Why should 'we' expect it to be?

What's the difference? None. A person genuinely feeling they are in need of a rescue, no matter how they got there.
Why should "we" expect a difference? Perhaps because "we" the experienced walkers or those among us with a little more common sense, would know the difference between acceptable and not acceptable when it comes to preparedness and required experience when climbing remote southwest peaks (as the sign makes pretty clear). Just a thought. I guess they thought they were prepared because they had a PLB. If so, turns out they were right.
Accidents can happen to any of us, it's in my mind when replying to topics similar to this one, would my written word live to bite me if I ever needed to use my PLB? I still take the attitude when I'm out there, that it's like I was out there 20 years ago and I didn't have a PLB. You need to be careful. But if I got bitten (penetrated) by a snake (for example) I'd be going for the button pretty quick.

It's ok, a boulder the size of a small child tried it on with me an Azza a couple of months ago in a gulley and we dodged it by going into the "climb the frikken walls" position.

Regardless of the wisdom or lack of it shown by the Tourists and the shonky reporting the outcome of life being saved should IMHO be a reason to be happy and heaven forbid that any of "us" may need " the big yellow taxi " one day.

Come on fella's - a few weeks ago I was viewing a post of a snow trip through the reserve.
Predictions were not good 'turned out to coincide with Tasmania's best snowfalls for about 6 years ' and yet the walkers plowed on.
No I am not criticsing them for one minute. ( I have often in my travels in the 'high country' marvelled at just what skills we have lost as we become more 'civilised', and observed where and when the old timers would trudge with no modern gear and perhaps a pack horse and a dog if lucky)
But what if that earlier Cradle reserve trip had turned bad? What would you blokes have said about that?
I value search and rescue and also appreciate the fickle weather we have and how quick things go pearshape but also know just how much we love the outdoors and the challenges.

Yes there are senseless acts that require unncessary rescue but I agree with Nik's comments above.

BTW I really enjoyed those pics of snow in reserve and as said - skills we once had that for most have long vanished.

I would like to know if they had a tent, wais in regard torm gear and how much food.
It doesnt sound like they were in a life or death situation unless they didnt have the above
If they had hunkered down in their tent for 24/48 hours would enough snow have melted for them to see the track.
Are we going to see people starting to set off PLBs when they encounter a swollen river that they cant cross.

Before people start hassling me , yes I have had to be rescued because of a swollen river(the Gordon) we sat beside it for 7 days waiting for it to go down. We only had 3 days worth of food and emergency rations for 1 more. We rationed our food and could have lasted a few more days before starting to become very uncomfortable. We didnt set off our PLB but yelled across the river to walkers on the other bank to let our partners what was happening.

I am not sure what the answer is in regard setting off PLBs. I carry one but its going to be a really bad situation for me to set it off.

Funny you mention that. My group had planned to do the Denisons/Stars/Stepped Hills/Mt Wright over the long weekend, but decided against it today because we anticipated a chance of the Gordon being impassable on the way in or worse, on the way out. Oh course, between us we have a PLB, but we'd be negligent to ignore our common sense and do the trip and then get stuck. It seems this isn't many people's approach.

PS: I admire your tenacity, that must've been a dull week!

Very dull Ollster, as it was meant to be only a quick trip in to Rhona I didnt take a book.
Spent half the time dashing out of the tent when the rain stopped to see if the river had gone up or down. Mainly it was going up. Then it snowed.

My tent game, is to try and list all the American states.

I think it may have been me that ploughed on in the scenario you referred to. The critical thing was that I was pretty confident about the situation and knew how to get out of it (the last two times at least). I was quite critical of our friend who came to meet us from the other direction as she was inexperienced and I'd strongly advised her against it (she made it ok thankfully).

We are guessing that these people were not prepared enough (in terms of knowledge and experience) for what they attempted in the forecast conditions. However we don't know the full story and there may be more to it than that (eg, map, compass and GPS destroyed or lost in some sort of accident).

My favorite from these signs is the guy being chased over the cliff by a pair of one-legged wombats. :)

YET Another rescue...

Postby tasadam » Tue 26 Oct, 2010 8:39 am

Though not a rescue as such, but an extraction due to failed knees, last night on the Overland track apparently.

No info available from the police (which AMSA found strange as it was the police rescue helicopter that was used), but AMSA have informed me that a 73 year old man was walking yesterday afternoon in the Lake Windermere area, when he injured his knee. A PLB was activated, and he was extracted by helicopter and taken to hospital.

Hi kez (daznkez) here have just been reading rescue posts, and thought of one thing to mention. Why is it that they had an eprib but no gps! Daz and i have a good gps but no eprib(as yet), and have found it to be a far more useful tool. Mark the car turn on the the track back function and these people would probably not needed to be rescued. i totally understand the need for epribs, however based on my own tassie experiences the gps is a real life saver in bad weather conditions. Be good to hear what others think on this subject. look forward to seeing some of u out there this season happy travels and stay safe!!!

Totally agree. I carry both (GPS and PLB) but if I could only have one, it would be the GPS 99 times out of 100.
