South Coast Track-Bouy Ck camping

Postby snowgum » Fri 03 Dec, 2010 3:07 pm

Hi,
we're walking this in middle Feb and planning on camping at Bouy Ck rather than Point Eric. This will give us an easier 2nd day before the Ironbound ranges. Is this a worthwhile option? if there's anything else I need to know that's not in Chapman's book, pls let me know.

I wouldnt have thought so.
It's only about a 20minute walk from Eric to Bouy creek.
There is a decent camp site at Louisa creek and Louisa river. I'd think about pushing onto on of these to make the day over the Ironbounds easier (The Ironbound range really isnt as bad as you hear)

When I last did the SCT, I went from Melaluca to Louisa creek day 1. day 2 over the Ironbounds to Little Deadmans, day 3 to Osmiridium beach, then out on day 4.
Nothing to see here.

Hi snowgum
are you planning on doing the Ironbounds on second or third day?
Point Eric to Louisa is a fair walk in its own right, not long but people underestimate the Redpoint hills and it is a bit of a grind on the duckboard from there to Louisa river, so many would just stroll down to Pt Eric on first day, Louisa second day, Ironbounds third day. As ILSWTAS says there is not a huge time advantage to going to Bouy creek, but if you do the camping is fine.
Anything else to know about SCT........go slowly, breathe and smile.

My prefered option is :
1st day to Point Eric
2nd day to Louisa Bay
3rd day spend the morning exploring Louisa Bay and in the afternoon a short walk to Louisa River ready for the ironbounds next day.

An advantage of bouy creek is the beach. If the weather is nice then it is good swimming here. When I did the SCT we camped at Bouy Creek. The plan was to shorten the second day to Louisa River. Even so, I found this stretch quite long - there is a reasonable climb up Red Point Hills to start with and then it seems a grind to get to Louisa -lots of duckboarding along the way. Cheers Andrew

Re Mt Weld - four of the group did. I opted out. Visibility was very poor and scrub bashing in rain and mist always dampens my enthusiasm. Can't see the point if you don't get a view. I like to stand at the top and take in the scenery!

I stayed at Bouy Creek in January, walked the other way so it was a short and easy day from Louisa River.

Not really worth it in terms of making the next day shorter, but arguably insofar as it's a nicer spot than Point Eric IMO. Fantastic spot to watch the sunset and less crowded than Point Eric (at least when I was there - loads of people at PE but had Bouy Creek to myself).

The plot thickens! We might have to revert to plan A. Beach, sunset, no people- we have a winner!

thanks. Now who can give me some pointers about the WOJ?? apart from minding the tiger snakes?

No probs - hopefully I haven't let the cat out of the bag and now you'll be sharing it with the hordes ;)

Haven't been to the WOJ since I was knee-high, though I'm hoping I might be able to spend some time up there this summer... only advice would be to take a travel fly fishing rod if you have one - someone needs to catch all the fish we didn't on our trip
