Temma to Granville

Postby ILUVSWTAS » Tue 07 Dec, 2010 5:51 pm

I have been re-living an idea I had a few years ago that never took off.... I've always wanted to see Sandy cape and the rest of the beaches up there are just beautiful (ones i've seen anyway) so I'd really like to walk the coast from Temma to Granville Harbour (or vise versa).

Just wondering if there's any forum members that have walked or paddled or driven along any of this section that could give any suggestions on terrain, water, river crossings etc etc.
I know theres a rough 4wd track from Granville to Pieman, i've walked a very short section of this, and much of the way would be along beaches, so it shouldnt be too hard to cover some good miles.

It's mostly the river crossings that have me worried......
Nothing to see here.

I've been in a 4WD along the whole lot. Your most major obstacle will be the Pieman River - I've swum across, and then back but I'm a reasonably good swimmer and didn't have a pack. You would want to be a confident swimmer to do it. Pieman Heads to Granville no problems - there are bridges across the creeks. The rivers down to Sandy Cape and beyond are very variable so it's hard to say - if it hasn't rained for a while, they should be OK, although I reckon you'd still want to be very careful. The tides are also weird down there. I don't think fresh water would be a problem.

I'd be more worried about the locals... it's part of the NW, after all.

I went down the coast as far as Sandy Cape in October.

From what I saw, and on previous jaunts up from the Pieman, I also don't see any problem apart from the Pieman crossing. It would be a great walk, and fab scenery abounds.

I would caution regarding 4WD: be aware that many have been lost in the creek crossings on the beach. Go with other vehicles and have someone with experience with you. It takes a shockingly short time to lose a vehicle in the sand. Also be very aware of the dangers of gear failure while towing/extracting a vehicle - there was another teenager lost on the mainland recently, and one lost a year back on the west coast.
