Mt Wedge with a todler?

Postby Vern » Sun 13 Mar, 2011 8:35 pm

I was thinking of taking a walk up Mt Wedge with my 20 month old and was wondering if anyone has been up there recently and if you could give a brief track description, ie. If it is overgrown and how long it would take etc?

I did it in early January. Nice walk and well worth doing for the views over the SW from the summit if the weather is in your favour. I assume you will be carrying your 20 month old? It's not a difficult walk but is a fairly solid (relentless) climb up through the forest. Gets quite steep with loose scree as you approach the summit plateau with a few spots where it could be described as mild scrambling. Generally easier from there. Well signposted from the carpark on obvious tracks. Not overgrown as such. There are sections where scrub encroaches on the track, narrowing it; I didn't find it a problem (but I also wasn't carrying a child). Also a few places where it was a bit wet and consequently muddy/potentially slippery (not deep). There are a number of treefalls to be negotiated, either climb over or skirt around. I wasn't in a hurry but if pushed could probably do it in 2-3 hours return (it's signposted as 5 hrs return which would be reasonable I think). About 7km total distance from memory.

Thanks for that. I am carrying her. Sounds like it should be a good walk for us.
